Personally I found it overrated, but that is to say, overrating something as revolutionary still means that thing is GOOD. Funkin' is fast and aggressive, using long-learned fundamentals cranked to max speed to force you into discomfort. The songs are good, if not a little edgy. It was a nice challenge! But also dammit I cannot believe I had to reconcile with the existence of Pico and Tankman again in my late twenties. That's an act of evil.
This game is very easy to hate on but it will always be a guilty pleasure of mine and a game that I come back to a lot. I don't think it does anything insane in terms of gameplay, and diehard fans of 4 button rhythm games aren't going to be won over by this game. But I love this game for its style and music and presentation, I really hope it gets finished one day. Oh and the modding community is nuts.
I think what's cool about this game is its aesthetic and vibe, rather than the actual rhythm game itself. Its art style and attitude is very much "Newgrounds" if that makes any sense. Songs can be catchy, but can be kind of annoying if you can't get behind the "Beeps" and "Boops"
If you're looking for a complex and deep rhythm game though I'd look elsewhere.
