Fantastic but playing it after playing 0 made it look kinda worse in comparison.

This games pretty underwhelming after kiwami but I think that has to do with it being 1 to 1 (besides the added nishiki alone cutscenes) with a ps2 action game that was made with the expectation that it would be a one off (funny enough the next couple of games would be written to feel like they would be the last yakuza game since they weren't sure if another one would get approved) Also man a lot of these electronic remixes of the original music kind of land flat in my opinion I do not like them as much as I liked the orginal PS2 tracks. But its still a really solid fun experience and I don't really think it overstays its welcome. Oh also I don't think this serves as a good replacement for Yakuza 1 since a lot of that games ambience and music that fit the games tone is lost in kiwami.

Gameplay is an improvement from 0 but goddamn whoever thought the majima everywhere system was a good idea AND having it tie to your dragon style progression needs to be slapped and fired from the company.

The worst thing about this is that Sega and RGG just act like this is the definitive way to experience the first game in the franchise which is simply not true.

Couple that with lack of details from the original and being a yakuza 0 asset flip and you have yourself one of the laziest remakes i've ever played.

Just localize the HD collection and put it on new consoles and don't act like it doesn't exist, SEGA.

Yakuza Kiwami faces a unique challenge in that it tries to be a faithful remake of the series' first game from a decade ago while not contradicting the new characterizations given to some major characters like Majima and Nishiki in the very well received prequel preceding this release. In Nishiki's case this gap is bridged pretty successfully with the additional cutscenes detailing what he has been up to during Kiryu's time in prison. Though some of the dialogue that makes it sound like jealousy over Yumi was a core reason for Kiryu and Nishiki's falling out does feel a little weird given that these new cutscenes paint a new picture of mistreatment in the Tojo Clan and the loss of his sister as the major reasons behind Nishiki's downfall, alongside Yakuza 0 previously building up their brotherhood as something almost too strong to crumble over a woman. With Majima things don't play out as smoothly since at this point RGG Studio has to connect three different personas that they've created for this character over time, so you kinda get whiplash between Majima in the main story and Majima in side content. The Majima Everywhere system honestly loses comedic value after the first few encounters, and the skill learning system could generally be balanced a lot better. Personally I don't mind that the combat system is recycled from Yakuza 0; it works and it's fun to play. Kiryu being rusty after a decade in prison and having to relearn the Dragon style seems cool from a lore standpoint but doesn't go over too well in practice. On my second playthrough I rushed through the main story on a brand new save without engaging in any side content and ended up very underpowered by the finale. Especially the boss fight with Jingu sucks and is easily one of the worst in the entire series. Overall I think it's a solid game and remake, and I'm glad it exists to breathe new life into a very important entry in the series. It's not perfect but it will always have a special place in my heart for being one of the two original games to feature Nishiki.

10 years in the joint

Can't look at this game the same after Infinite Wealth

Yakuza Kiwami may not be the best in the franchise but it is a good game, if you compare Kiwami against Yakuza 0 you can be a little disappointed.

Despite being very clearly flawed in certain parts which knock it some points, I absolutely loved this game.

So incredibly thematically rich and (mostly) amazing character work. Kiryu was handled extremely well except for one instance but the real star was Akira Nishikiyama.... what a character.

As for gameplay it's only slightly lesser than Y0 fundamentally but there's a few bosses that are unquestionably awfully designed and really unfun.
The Majima everywhere system is my favourite thing ever

Majima Everywhere is the greatest subplot in all of the games.

I really enjoyed yakuza kiwami, but it does have its flaws.

The story only really picks up near the end, and while I dont consider it bad it never had me fully hooked.

The combat is as good as 0, but after doing enough leveling the dragon style becomes overpowered.

the majima everywhere system never became repetive for me as he becomes pretty easy to beat with a high level dragon style, however I can see how some people will not want to fight the same boss many times.

Kiwami dedicates itself to keeping itself inline with the original, which makes the game struggle to bridge yakuza 0 to the rest of the series. Whenever kiryu has a flashback to nishiki it only uses examples from kiwami, which is 2 scenes at most. 0 did a good job of making nishiki a more interesting character, but kiwami fails to pick up the torch and make him an interesting villian.

I loved every minute of this game. I don't really enjoy open world games, but kamurocho is so well designed and fun to explore.
The combat is satisfying, the story is a little cheesy at times, But I enjoyed it a lot.

Better than 0

literally this until the end, the end was more like THIS but right after the final fight it became more like this... you feel me?

but overall i did enjoy the game :)
