I feel bad giving this game such a low rating, since i like alot about it. The different endings, the gritty tone, the experimental music, the ability to run, and the fact that its more story driven than the previous games. And then i remember that samurai boss with like 9 health bars, and I suddenly don't feel bad anyone.

Jesus Christ, this game is hard. Hard is an understatement. This game is FUCKING hard. Hell, i've even heard some people say that streets of rage 2 on mania is easier than this game on normal mode. And while i only beat streets 2 on normal, i wouldn't be surprised if it is. On top of that, those motherfuckers over at Sega hated children so much that they made it so if your playing on easy mode, the game ends at stage 5, and you aren't able to progress any further.
They also decided to bring back Mona and Lisa as the stage 2 boss. Fucking BS. They aren't as hard as they were in streets 1, but still.

Unless you want your life to be dedicated to beating this, I would recommend using the 9 lives and round select cheats if you want to get any ending other than the bad ending on easy.
I've heard that Bare Knuckle 3, the Japanese version, is easier, so once i get my hands on a translated rom, ill be able to give my true thoughts on this game.

For now, fuck it.

It's the first time I use all my 3 lives before stage 3 in Streets of Rage (and on easy mode)

@2manyW
I got the 9 lives today and it's still damn difficult. I'm not sure I'll even complete this game at this point haha

@Laires Make sure to use the round select code too, 27 lives isn't enough to handle this game. Even then its still hard, especially the final level

@2manyW
I will! Thank you for the tips. I hope I can finally complete this haha

With a lot of sweat and curse words haha
Gotta try SoR4 now!

@Laires Streets 4 was actually my first SOR game, and even then it was pretty easy. You don't have to worry about earth-shatteringly hard difficulty, unlike streets 3. Still a great game!

Are we the same person? This was literally my experience with the game until I played the Japanese version, which is actually on par with the second game. It's not as if I'm a stranger to the whole western=harder thing either- I just think it's overkill in this case. Grew up playing the North American Dynamite Headdy for example and even after doing both versions back to back, I still think it's not nearly as bad as what happened here. In Headdy, the damage dealt was just scaled up for the player. For SOR3, there's that and the fact that the enemies move like they all chugged red bull. Hope you get around to the JP edition- I was shocked at the difference it made.

@evy96 I didn't know the western Dynamite Headdy had a localisation change! I've been planning on diving into that and Alien Soldier for a while now, hope it doesn't ruin the game like what happened to SOR3..
Anyway, i'm excited to see how much of an improvement BR3 is over the American version, I would be happy if the only difference is that fucking difficulty that made SOR3 a massive slog.

With Headdy, you're probably better off doing the JP one first still. To me, it's just really weird to play because I grew up with the american one and it just felt so trivial in comparison. That being said, if you're a plot kind of guy, there is also a lot more plot and context given in the JP release that got cut out of the localization for whatever reason. It's a good time either way but whatever you do...don't play the GameGear version. It's...very rough and doesn't do the game justice in the way M2 did with GG Gunstar Heroes. :S

@evy96 I'll might go with the Japanese version, since (apparently) the game has no continues. I'll still use cheats though cuz I suck at platformers lol. I also didn't know that there were Game Gear versions of DH and GH, and yeah, i can't imagine games like them would translate too well to an 8-bit system

Gunstar Heroes on the Gamegear is surprisingly good, but that's probably because M2 made it and quite frankly anything they touch is gold as far as I'm concerned (even imported the Aleste collection a few months back for switch). Headdy just felt painfully phoned in and definitely wasn't handled by them, which is odd considering they're both treasure games. For whatever reason though, that's what they decided to port to the SMS in Brazil instead of Gunstar.
