“The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap” is a game oozing with charm and personality, but has a few drawbacks in its overall game design.

Stepping out into this game's rendition of Hyrule is an experience that is much reminiscent of “A Link Between Worlds” in terms of art style. The charming expressions that all the characters react to the player with is a welcome addition that adds more life to the already colorful and whimsical world that surrounds you.

“The Minish Cap” and its wonderful atmosphere remain prominent in its dungeons, however the dungeon design itself is not something that matches what the aesthetics do, in terms of quality. While there certainly are highlights when it comes to this game's dungeon crawling, a sizeable portion of this aspect is filled with long, tedious, confusing and sometimes unfair moments that hinder enjoyment for the player.

The combat in “The Minish Cap”, like its dungeon crawling mechanics, also tends to be a mixed bag. The game features a wide variety of combat-worthy tools, that gives the player a unique and fun moveset to play around with, and for the most part, casually fighting in the overworld and the dungeons is a blast. However, the cracks start to show during the boss battles, as they're way too ambitious for the tools that the player has at their disposal, and feel as if they weren't made with the player's moveset in mind.

What “The Minish Cap” lacks in its combat and dungeon design, is ultimately made up for by the brilliant exploration and collection aspects. The “Kinstone” mechanic provides a fun and engaging sense of accomplishment that cannot be matched by any other game in the series.

Even though the game falters in some areas of its design that would otherwise be executed perfectly in most other 2D Zelda games, those snags don’t do much at all to detract from the brilliantly designed exploration mechanics and the eccentric and colorful atmosphere. For every flaw this game bears, there’s an unprecedented level of charm exuding from that crack, making for a wonderful and pleasant experience.
