For me, DKC is ruined by its visuals. Not because it looks bad, or anything, I actually quite like it, but I think the smooth, irregular graphics make every single platform and hitbox impossible to immediately gauge, which for a game so demanding is damning. It's a shame, because otherwise, I think it's quite the great game.

I found hit detection totally fine in dkc. Didn't have much issue landing on enemies and when I did it was only during the snowy levels on the sloped ground with multiple enemies coming at ya and even then if you found the biggest part on their body you could consistently bonk them with your jump

I don't really think the hitboxes are bad (for the most part), it's just really difficult to eyeball how big they are before actually reaching them for me. Like, for example most platforms are a little curved at the end, and I can't really tell when that curve stops being a platform, which is a life-or-death issue in a platformer.
