Reynauld and Dismas have gay sex!

A cool concept with a pretty damn great execution too. The art style is memorable and gorgeous (in its own bleak way) and the voice acting of the narrator will still occasionally fill my mind when I do my stupid little tasks throughout the day.

Learning new things about how the game and its world operate feels great, and the loss of a favorite hero named something completely stupid is heartbreaking (at least initially, I'll get to that).

While the player essentially crafts their own story, Darkest Dungeon, to me, is about redemption, atonement, hope and survival, all themes that are some of my favorites.

As for the negatives, there are some balancing issues with the moves and the heroes, but managing your party and crafting a group that works is still satisfying. My biggest gripe might be that after a while I got tired of naming my heroes and failed to get attached to the same vestal or crusader model I'd seen a dozen times. The quirks aren't quite unique enough to make the heroes into their own characters. Then again, if the game wanted to make a point about how bosses treat their workes as disposable resources, point made. Grinding is of course a thing, a thing I don't really like.

Overall, I'd recommend Darkest Dungeon to any RPG-fan who doesn't mind a challenge that'll crush you in the first baby steps you take on your journey.

Man, I'm not even sure if I can put everything I feel about this game into words. It means so much to me. I mean, I have a goddamn Pathologic tattoo! It's given me an incredible amount, from a new outlook on life, a bit more self love, and characters to reflect on myself through, to incredible friends and powerful experiences with art.

The writing obviously stands out as the most clearly amazing part, but aside from that, there's also the beautiful and deeply atmospheric music, the detailed and alive world, fascinating and intimate-feeling item designs and descriptions, as well as just the insane amount of creativity the game exudes.

I'm running out of positive adjectives here, it's that good.

It won't be for everyone. It's ruthlessly challenging at first, at times horrifically depressing, and just fucking strange. Still, it's one of the most fascinating gaming experiences you'll ever have.
