The story is literally peak (you will cry), but the fusion mechanics plus the unintuitive and clunky (albeit stylish for the early PS2) UI sadly hold it back. Hoping the remake fixes these issues.
Combat is good once you learn it, no party control isn't the deal breaker people make out. The brutal difficulty adds to the game in my view and really makes you feel the struggle of the character's climb up Tartarus.
