A couple gestures towards entertaining mechanics like disguise-based stealth and some occasionally good jokes doesn't quite save this game from sinking beneath its own weight. As a pastiche of sci-fi in general it fails to find its focus, and its attempts at handling its capitalist critique just never come together, often feeling painfully both-sides-y or naive in a blinkered way. The reliance upon randomly generated loot also feels strange, and contributes towards making the world feel like an unreal roller coaster.

This is going to have a more far-reaching impact on the world of indie games people realize even now in 2020 as it hits its 1.0 release. Factorio's tight build/fight/fix loop is overlooked in favor of its fun and brain-candy feeling of automating production, but the genius of the game lies in its ability to cater to people who want a sandbox and to those who want a tighter, more dangerous experience.

Maybe the best roguelite since Spelunky 1 + 2. Goes hard into using the format to tell a story in a way few other games of its type can. Although it'd be easy to see that as the primary appeal, that story would be very hard to access without the incredibly tight-feeling and responsive combat system, blending the best elements of previous games by this studio into a much more finely-honed whole.
