the video game equivalent of crack

it's lowest-common-denominator "number go up" nonsense but man, does it feel good unlocking the right upgrades and mowing down everything your path

Was itching for a VR answer to Metal Gear Solid and this seemed to be the best on the market right now (in terms of PCVR). While it definitely tries it’s best to emulate the MGS feeling (even the sliding door sound effect is the same as in MGS1) this sadly felt too barebones for me to want to continue past the first couple of missions.

The AI isn’t very smart and you can’t really do a lot beyond sneaking or shooting (although the voice-activated shakedown function is pretty neat) and after the first couple of hours I kinda got the point. A decent enough stealth experience if you can get it cheap enough.

With VR games starting to pick up steam again, I feel like Konami are missing a trick by not developing an actual MGS VR Missions VR game. Although given the events of MGS2 that may not be such a good idea…

Pep's Season of Spooks - Game 5
Part run-and-hide horror, part run-and-gun wave shooter - sadly I wasn't particularly enamoured with either of them.
I may check out the full game that this is a preview for but the wave-based shooting was a little too frantic for me to figure out where I was supposed to be going until it was too late and I was being overwhelmed by enemies.
That said, the final scene (and the main character's emotional monologue on the phone) were very well done. It may just be enough for me to give EP,E a go now that it's out.

"complete local saturation" "caught myself a big one" - Man, the writers knew what they were doing here.

Infinitely better than the OG Separate Ways, this reminds me why I love RE4 Remake as a whole while adding some nifty new ideas and areas. Those who were sad about the laser hallway and other areas being cut from the main game will be VERY happy with this.

As a longtime series fan my absolute favourite part of the DLC was the remixed music from the original RE4 and also RE2. It sounded amazing and is honestly better than the main game's music.

Lily Gao is still not great but I kinda got used to her in the end. Her performance definitely doesn't "ruin the game" like some dipshits seem to think.

For £7.99 this is well-worth it. Highly recommend!

Fun fact: when I was a child this game scared me to the point where I asked my stepdad to not keep the cartridge in the house.

As an adult it's a fairly basic beat-em-up with some cool visuals and an absolutely banging soundtrack.

Not a complete disaster, it's just boring and way too easy. Some neat enemy designs are dragged down by some absolutely terrible bosses (looking at you, infested tanks/chopper)

Nero is fun as hell to play, and I really enjoyed the story. Could have possibly been a 9 if the Cutlasses weren't a thing.

Pep's Season of Spooks - Game 4
A short but very memorable walking sim/horror that's over far too soon. Despite the lack of any actual scares the oppressive atmosphere more than makes up for it. Striking visuals, psychadelic colours and excellent sound design make me wish that the creators would expand this into a fuller experience.

This is the series finally coming into it's own. Great feeling combat, cool bosses, fiendish difficulty. Dante finally finds his "wacky woohoo pizza man" vibe we all know and love...

... and Vergil. Vergil, man. He's the coolest.

Pep's Season of Spooks - Game 7
Even if this isn't the "scariest" game in the truest sense, the sustained anxiety I felt throughout the game's four episodes more than qualifies it for the Season of Spooks.
I want to talk about just how good this game is, but I also want to give nothing away, as I personally feel that this is the best way to go into the game.
That being said, I feel like Silent Hill Townfall is in perfect hands with No Code.
Was planning to play this in a "technology is spooky" double bill with Pony Island but will have to do that another time.

Pep's Season of Spooks - Game 3
A promising demo! Would love to play the full game, fingers crossed it doesn't get killed by the cruel hand of copyright.
It's a very faithful love letter to David Lynch's classic and also to PS1-era survival horror. A few neat little references to other games and media sprinkled around too.
The only slight criticism I have is that some of the sound clips using dialogue from the original show are pretty poor quality, and the full game may benefit from getting voice actors to simply re-enact the dialogue. Overall though, a good tease of things to come.

Something about the mechanics of this one just really puts me off... I prefer a more straightforward horror game but all the "keep generator going" and "memorise these codes" bits and pieces means I have no desire to go back to it any time soon.

Maybe one to pick up again around Halloween?

The only game to ever make me properly cry, and I tell you I sobbed. Then I got really angry because I knew I was being so obviously manipulated, but the themes really hit home and I couldn't help but be emotionally destroyed by them.

Nearly 8 years later, I'm still not sure how I feel about this game. Might be time for a replay.

Wow, can't believe I just spent 12 hours playing a game that doesn't exist...

God, what a fucking slog this was. Edgy 2013 writing, a dull and unoriginal story and Vergil wears a fucking fedora. At least the gameplay is decent.

Anyway, isn't DMC5 fantastic?
