Bio
SMT enthusiast and reviewer for I Dream of Indie Games and I Dream of Retro Games. I am a huge fan of RPGs, metroidvanias, classicvanias, horror games, and adventure games. I also play other genres as well, but these are the ones I play most frequently. Some of my favorite games/series include Shin Megami Tensei, Fear & Hunger, Blasphemous, Phantasy Star, Ys, Castlevania/Bloodstained, Metroid, Hollow Knight, Lies of P, the Soulsborne games, Darkest Dungeon, Trails, Infernax, Dungeons & Dragons, Vanillaware games, Sweet Home, Spirit Hunter, World of Horror, The Mortuary Assistant, The 7th Circle, Team Ladybug games, and dungeon crawlers made by Experience. There are many more games that I love, but this might give you a general idea of my taste in games.

A very misunderstood game by those who don't realize that it is going for a horror narrative, so you will have to look for the answers to questions about the story instead of them being directly handed to the player. It is a direct sequel to Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne, and that game should be played first to fully understand the story because the canon ending in that game explains more of why everything is happening in SMT V.

This is a great revision of an already great game. There are extra difficulty settings, new apps to customize your gameplay, and new story routes and endings involving the character Alexandra, which I think fit the SMT alignments better than the original endings. I know some people prefer the bleakness of the original endings, but I think the new ones are a better representation of the SMT alignments in showing that none of them are one-dimensional.

This game is a masterpiece and is in a tie for my second favorite game of all time with Blasphemous 2. SMT IV takes elements from early SMT and modernizes them in the best kind of way with a story that is more character-driven than most mainline SMT games. The combat is wonderfully chaotic and hits hard, the beginning of this game is infamously difficult, but you will eventually be able to become stronger and you can eventually become more overpowered than you can in any other mainline SMT game. The desire to replay a wonderful game like this is one of the reasons my backlog continues to pile up to mountainous heights.
