Todd Howard's Favourite Games

Compiled in part because I think it's cool when devs talk about other devs' games, in part because it's good to remind ourselves of the people behind a product and also in part to officially declare this better taste than that of anyone with a Backloggd account.

Added bonus: his favourite RPGs. Off the top of my head he's also a noted enjoyer of Breath of the Wild, which would make sense considering Hidemaro Fujibayashi and Eiji Aonuma cited Skyrim as one of it and Tears of the Kingdom's main inspirations (alongside RDR2 in the latter's case).

Stumbled upon all this while talking with a friend about how many aspects of Bethesda's open world design is taken for granted and people's eagerness to aggressively misinterpret things he may or may not have actually said as lies. Something something, climbing a mountain (singular) which you do go up after barely two or three quests.

Great work on this list! I always wondered what his favorite games were over the years.

@Detectivefail Thanks, took a bit of sleuthing since the site that interviewed him hasn't been around for a decade plus. I remember once coming across a collage of a bunch other notable devs who were asked what their favourite games were and half of it was just Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.

I remember immediately thinking to myself "there's no way this would exist without skyrim" after the first 20 minutes of booting up breath of the wild. Then i saw him praise it on Lex Friedman (not a fan of the channel just came for Todd) and i was like yeah that makes sense.

I also find it interesting how many botw enjoyers seem to not get Skyrim.

@Snappington1 Yeah, prior to TOTK’s release I’d been revisiting Skyrim while finishing up a few things in BOTW and it was interesting to feel the overlap between them firsthand. I think it makes sense that they can appeal to different audiences despite that overlap, though. Even something we don’t really tend to think about like their different camera perspectives makes a difference in how you see and interact with their worlds to an extent, nevermind how differently their worlds are structured, their traversal options, different degrees of emphasis on roleplaying elements, etc.
