Clearly taking inspiration from RPGs like Undertale and Pokémon, Omori carves its own unique story, art style, and characters. Omori is about a group of friends that started to grow apart and change following the death of one of their own. This story unravels in such a unique way, being told through an ideal dream sequence from the memories of youth when the group was happy, contrasted to the reality and grown changes of everyone. The characters in the dream world are so creative and hilarious, (my favorite is Sweetheart) and there is so much to explore. There's side quests everywhere, different objects and characters to interact with, and paths going everywhere that all slowly help reveal the story and add to the environment. Omori won't be for everyone. When we get to the real world, we are face first with some serious themes of death, depression, anxiety, and suicide. It can also come off pretty melodramatic at times. It's a brutal juxtaposition to all the fun we were just having in the dream world. However, when the darkness of reality starts to seep in to our suppressed dreams, what do we do? Do we face the truth? How do we overcome it? These are the questions Omori sets out to answer, and I think it all comes together beautifully through the power of our mended friendship. Omori is a testament to the love we all deserve despite our pasts, and trying to admire our good memories along with the bad ones. It's a showcase of the beauty in remembering what our friends have done for us, and how we can keep those memories tight to our chest as we move forward. Even if we don't get to play our duet, we can still play a song just as beautifully by ourselves, because we know our backs are being held up by the memories and words of those close to us.
