A survival horror oddity for the DS that I replayed on a phone emulator.

The atmosphere of this game is super duper intense. The soundtrack has a lot of droning, ambient noise, with a very haunting leitmotif floating around in the background of some areas. The sound effects are loud and echoing, emphasizing the fact that you are all alone. It creates such a spooky vibe that I haven’t seen replicated by any game but the sequel. The story is decent here as well, with some great beats and a satisfying conclusion.

Overall I’d recommend this to anyone with a passing interest in survival horror. It’s very different from the hallmarks, but its unique style and amazing ambience make it well worth checking out.

"One thing, Peter. Where's this plane heading, anyway?"

Following D2 up with this was an insane choice that really paid off. Sad to see all the characters from The Silver Case and The 25th Ward go, but happy for the memories and messages they imparted on me. This series is really something special, something so universally applicable and strange that it instantly burrowed its way into my brain and heart. Sometimes the minute interactions we have with people we only see once or twice keep us going, the reminder that we are all humans, living in a vast pool of confusion and mystery, and nobody really knows what is going on until we finally confront death and life head on. What a perfect piece of media, that will surely age well as time goes on.

"It's set to touch down in the real world."

Strong contender for the best game ever made. It's crafted with so much love and care that it's easy to overlook its many flaws, and its central message just propels it to an impossible level of achievement. Why this isn't as celebrated as some other, similarly off-kilter and narratively rich games I don't know.

My one major gripe with this game is the voice dubbing. It actually sucks. Like the dubbing is really, really bad. Except for Laura's english voice actor, she does a fine job (granted, she has like, two lines in the game).

The gameplay really works with me. The gameplay is a combination of on-rails shooting, jrpg random encounters, third-person exploration, hunting simulation, point and click adventure segments, puzzle solving, and resource management. This all sounds like a lot, but it's honestly pretty easy to get the hang of.

Of course, the main draw of the game is the story. It's a strange, slow paced, high stakes horror that takes inspiration from the works of Lovecraft, John Carpenter (mainly The Thing), and David Lynch. And it ends with one of the most hopeful, yet sobering endings I have ever seen. Overall, I highly recommend this, but it may take some time to adjust to the game's slow pace.

Happy New Year 2000.
