I will never understand why people excuse the terrible writing in this game. This probably has the worst story up to this point in the Pokémon series by far. Gameplay is still the embodiment of the strawman people point to when they say "turn-based combat is outdated."

Some things are improved but not enough to make up for all the downgrades. Half the region being water does not work at all.

Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire do improve the characters somewhat; sure, the villains' actions are still dumb and misguided, but at least in ORAS they each know why they want to expand the land/water. But alas, so many other Pokémon fans are quick to write off ORAS just because it doesn't have the Battle Frontier that so many people have told me they care about but so few have shown me that they care about.

@CassiDS ORAS is better than Emerald specifically for those changes. However, the "too much water" criticism still holds in my eyes. Feels like they retroactively had to give a reason to two villains they just phoned in cause "dual games". I'm glad they toned it back and focused on fleshing out one team going forward. Eventually they went on to make a Team that put all others to shame in the form of Team Plasma, an organization with genuinely compelling motives.
