i completely agree that game journalists shouldn't be regurgitated ad nauseam but when sonic as struggled to find its footing in 3d even 24 years later i do think "rocky transition into 3d" is completely true even if it's incredibly overdone to the point of sounding stupid. i also agree that games should be judged on their own merits, but when a series has a consistent set of problems between games there is going to be mention of those past games, even if the new game improves on what came before it
