A lot of people are asking "who, how and why?", and unfortunately I can't get a concrete answer for who actually did the port job (barring one guy on Era who said it was Digital Eclipse, but that's literally about as reliable as some rando on the street). But the reason it was so shit was because they had to bang it out in a month and only had the shitty mobile port code to work with, and obviously they knew it was trash and kept their name off of it.

I think it basically boils down to if you survived the events of 06 you're probably a Sonic fan for life, because I like to think Sonic will never drop quite this low ever again.

My wife is a 2006 apologist, but I don't think she's played this version of Sonic. I may have to find out if there is a limit to her Sonic fanaticism.
Just give her the game gear version of Sonic 2, she'll instantly turn into an Alex Kidd fan after she game overs to the first boss.
