One of the most heinous gaming crimes you could commit is listen to a game's ost for years, and never actually play the game it's from. Another is to neglect a system's library, and only play the Bomberman games on it. It's only apt that I use a game with "Gate" in it's title to be my gateway into the PC Engine's offerings.

God, what a cool fucking shmup we've got here. Multiple weapons that you can swap to at any time once you've collected them, things are active and only get even more hectic as time goes on, and bosses that will absolutely keep you on your toes. Nothing sucks here, nothing. This didn't even display a lick of slowdown from what I could tell, which is seriously kind of insane. I obviously don't have a degree in PC Engine knowledge, but this shit seriously feels like it's pushing the system.

Even though I did use save states never did I feel like the game was being unfair with its enemy placement or that something was just pure bullshit. Every time I died it was because I wasn't vigilant enough, or because my shitty reflexes weren't good enough. Never once feeling an ounce of rage, just pure thrill and a strive to do better. It really feels like a ton of thought was put into every enemy formation and boss attack to not just kill the player, but give them a fighting chance to potentially actually dodge the shit thrown at them. If you're however some kind of god of shooting, may I perhaps point you to the fucking DEVIL DIFFICULTY?!!?! One of my favorite names for a highest difficulty setting I've seen in a while.

The soundtrack though, PHEW. Good god does it go hard, I mean no hyperbole when I say it's possibly one of my favorite OSTs off of a shmup. It's fan-fucking-tastic. I for sure probably wouldn't have even bothered with this if I hadn't heard it before!

I really can't wait to check out Lords of Thunder, and the rest of what this system has for me! Hell, I may even attempt to play this game again, and beat it without save states and feel better about listing this as "completed". It's definitely a shmup I can see myself playing multiple times. Huge recommend.
