Origami King is a very weird game but works just enough to fall under that "good" umbrella, I think. As with almost every Mario RPG, the characters and dialogue are wonderfully charming, and the world design is great. Origami King itself might be one of the best looking games on the Switch. It is also a step up from the previous two Paper Mario games, without a doubt. It's still not anywhere near the achievements of the first three in the series, but it's headed in the right direction, with the kind-of-return of buddies and returning of an interconnected world.

Boy oh boy, that combat though. It does WORK sometimes, yes. The puzzles can be pretty difficult and somewhat satisfying to solve correctly, especially in the boss battles, but why does it exist in the first place? The combat of Origami King seems almost just like a side minigame. There is no reason related to the origami theme of the game for it to exist, it is completely out of place, and just not at all what anyone wanted. It's not the worst thing ever in a vacuum, far from it; but god it just does not fit at all and is honestly just not very fun. I would have much preferred just about anything else, apart from the Color Splash/Sticker Star system. When you get the ability to kill weak enemies with your hammer, I really just wished that real-time, Super Paper Mario style combat was possible for the entire game.

Anyways, Origami King is a GOOD game. The combat makes no sense and just is weird but everything else is very charming and nice and it is certainly going in the right direction. The story is nothing really much very memorable (apart from that ONE moment), and I do long for the days of a more meaningful story in a Paper Mario game, but there isn't much we can do about that.
