There is something that is so special about this game, the last of what is often considered the "old style" of Final Fantasy games. Most of what makes the game so magical has been said before time and time again, and deservedly so. FFIX is an achievement in the RPG genre and deserved of the title many bestow upon it as one of the greatest ever in the genre. The game has some of the most genuine, loveable, memorable, and iconic characters in video game history while telling a very relatable, humanistic, and heartbreaking story—one of my absolute favorites.

The combat has a bit of that unforgiving older-RPG feel to it but never felt impossible. Each party member has a unique role and the overall balance is pretty impressive for a 2000 game. There is just truly a countless number of truly memorable and emotional moments throughout FFIX that I will happily never have leave my mind.

I love new Final Fantasy and I hate to be one of those people to say "older [insert franchise] was better," but I really do miss RPGs in this style with big budgets. I hope that maybe FFIX can get a 1:1 remake while expounding upon so many of the conceptually beautiful areas that were only held back by the technology at the time.

9.5/10
