This game made me realize that there will never be a good Persona game. At best you can have a game that's good at doing the Persona formula. (i.e, a high school visual novel that's only sometimes a JRPG.. if the weather allows.) Persona 4 isn't even that. The story is too stupid and riddled with holes (talking teddy bear who has never met a human and who knows nothing about human society but is able to craft eyeglasses for everyone to wear) has cringe inducing dialogue that feels like it's pulled out of a tedious comedy sketch, has a silent protagonist that everyone else in the main cast immediately becomes trusting and subservient towards for no reason whatsoever, and invokes blatant dues ex machina in order to grant the protagonist the ability to weild a Persona without having to undergo any sort of character growth. (due to not having a character)

Y'guys seem to be telling me that I'm supposed to just roll with the bad story with the eventual payoff being that I get to experience more bad story.

So I get that others are already dogpiling but I can’t stand the confusion so here’s my olive branch explanation.
Teddie being able to do what he did isn’t a hole. Him not knowing what human society is but he somehow has the knowledge to make those glasses for them to see is a mystery and an establishment. Accepting the idea as preposterous from the outset is extremely narrow uncharitable way to view something no? The mystery is actually answered later even ((SPOILERS: he’s a shadow. His understanding and knowledge was something crafted by the TV world for him to represent the human mascot guide, someone friendly who can assist. Boom “””plot hole””” solved. Have a little fucking faith?))
Secondly, the protagonist is very obviously an avatar for you? He’s a character yes but he’s quite literally cardboard in order for you to have a bit of control of the outcome. His card is the Fool, his potential is only as limitless as you are. He wasn’t “granted” the ability to wield a persona he already actually had that power (what do you think that prologue was in the fog lol). He AWAKENED to it.
People became trusting to him because he demonstrated that power and he did end up making great calls in the beginning. It’s mostly just implicit stern leader I guess I’ll follow. I’ll grant that that part is poorly developed (P2 and 3 do a better job at this regard to a much much greater level), but even still it’s not much of a hole. As if you’ve never had a group project where you all didn’t fall in line to guesses on who should lead.

To reiterate you came in to this with little if not zero faith. I feel like you should have at least flipped things around. “Maybe I don’t get this idea and I’m just not reading the subtext.” Or at least, look for a reason for why things were the way they are, instead of getting aghast that it wasn’t explicitly filled in for you. That’s what makes this review so like, hilarious to everyone
