surprised by how much i ended up liking this

significantly more character and lore-driven than the rest of the series to this point. pretty much everything rance says is fucking hilarious and the gameplay is actually serviceable this time around due to having a real battle system - i don't know why it took this long to introduce controllable party members or more than two skills, but thank fucking god they're here now!

starting to also understand why trails and rance are gateways into each other for a lot of people... i think i know which series i'll be trying out next

What's it like to be the only guy a woman has willingly spoken to after playing Rance?

@exsoldier probably pretty similar to the sole guy out there who watched monogatari without being put on a sex offenders list afterward
ain't this the rape game

@compostcomeforth it is. though i think the protagonist being comically evil in every regard makes all the horrible shit he does pretty easy to brush off. nothing that holding the skip button can't resolve imo

I see that you're playing the series too, but it's curious that sometimes the reactions are quite opposite, hahah.
RIV wasn't one of the good ones for me. Liked the combat and the fact that the auto-battle was overall the point. And I also liked the intermissions where Rance rests and watches TV.
But overall, felt it quite lengthy. Maybe because how restrictive it was in the time/exploration department.

4.1-4.2 and 5D are the most experimental ones in their forms I'd say, and some of the ones I've enjoyed the most (but I'm yet to get through 5D). I also liked the reasons why both were made: 4.1-4.2 were the result of not wanting to do something ambitious like RIII, and 5D, just an affordable game to do due to complications (it's called 5 "D" because it was the fourth attempt (A-B-C-D)). TADA describes both of them as "stupid" games, but for me they're stupidly creative, and with more that meets the eye.

@Lot0 i actually found the combat fun because of how much i couldn't rely on the autobattle. maybe it's because i tend to run from a lot of battles in jrpgs, maybe it's cause i played the original version and not the recent patch which apparently makes the game a lot easier; regardless i found the battles significantly more engaging and dynamic than 1-3. i also thought there were a few points that were genuinely a bit challenging. i can't say the same for rance 1-3

4.1 i find really lacking gameplay-wise as it's pretty much autobattle: the game and also its dungeon crawling is super slow, but i do think its story is fun enough. haven't played 4.2 yet but i'll prolly do it for shits and giggles late (maybe after 6). 5d i actually think nails the vibe of 1-3 and 4.1/4.2 by just being a dumb, funny game with a satisfying gameplay loop despite being largely automated

@chandler Hm. At the beginning of the game, when you have to retrieve Sill from the Inn, don't you think that in preparation for battling the hag (sorry, don't remeber her name), you'd fight reeally slow in the nearby dungeon without the auto-battle? That's why I though it was a useful tool to take into account. In any case, the strategy for me, while advancing through the Toushin Toshi, was to decide whether or not to fight manually or not.

4.1-4.2 are one game I'd say. They're not two stories, but a two-part story. I consider it the opposite of RII, which was a sexual comedy in crescendo. 4.1 starts dumb and then... you'll see it, hahah. But one of the highlights for me is that I always could feel like I was advancing. Every option available and every step of the way. Nothing felt like a time waste. Wrote a review of the two of them but I don't know how to put he hyperlink.
And as for 5D, haven't finished yet but I love that roulette.

@lot0 well, actually i'm not sure if this is by design or if i just happened to get very lucky, but when i was exploring the initial area i stumbled into a room that had an enemy which gave me so much exp i pretty much instantly jumped to level 10. so i can't say there was any real period of time wasting there

also, good to know. i'll definitely finish 4.2 then before long in that case. btw with 5d: i would highly suggest sticking mostly to normal spins. if you don't fight enough you won't be a high enough level to beat the game. like, literally - there's a boss in ch3 that is unbeatable unless you've unlocked a certain move for rance

@chandler yeh, go for it. They're short games.
I got to that part in 5D so now I know x) But it's fine, I don't mind starting the game again.

I haven't finished Kichikuou Rance due to how demanding it is, but it's a 10/10. I'm with you with that one. Hope to get through 5D and VI and then try to complete it this time. I reached the final stages but didn't feel really prepared. One thing for sure, I'll read your PDF to remind stuff. Thanks for that!

@lot0 yeah, no problem! i made it for myself cause i didn't wanna fall prey to the game's confusing design like i saw happen to some people, but i'm glad others find it helpful too. it's a really great game and i can't really think of anything else like it that isn't also made by alicesoft. and i sure wish i could, because i love its whole stripped-down grand strategy type approach to conquering

@chandler In that regard maybe you could ask Felipe Pepe (@felipepepe) on Twitter. He's a vast encyclopedia of CRPGs and maybe any kind of RPG. He knows his stuff.
The only thing I can think of that may be similar it's from Alicesoft too: Daiakuji (and the others of the Dai series I suppose).

@lot0 perhaps. the dai series is also what i had in mind, yeah
