The very definition of pathetic. It is a constant vicious cycle exercise of self-hatred screaming "I'm sorry for what I am" while regurgitating on the otaku culture that it is so ashamed to belong to. Obviously, neither aspect is remotely well done (though I must admit that the beginning may deceive to think that the game has anything to do, which ends up being revealed to be the worst smelling kamikaze dumpster of fire) and there are some outlines of what the game wants to really do without shame (not to confuse with competently realized, the sci-fi leaning segments hint on what I hope the developers set out to do in further games that ends up being anecdotal in here, the most common storytelling segments regarding more conventional tones like suspense and horror can only be complemented with mediocre when most inspired). This is a game so disgraced that despite its obvious yearn to show the most degenerate and repulsive imagery as part of its critique/fascination self-conscious ironic contradiction it may be one of the few games published by Nitroplus, one of the biggest names on the VN industry that hasn’t yet heard of the word “delicacy”, and come out without even one hentai scene resorting to ridiculous and even more disgusting placeholders instead.

At times, I feel sorrow towards the people who made this, just as they want you to feel some shame for their otaku beyond salvation misogynist walking dirtbag of a protagonist. At the end, both unapologetically embrace the mess of their own heads with so little thought that I just stop caring.

so when i had finished the initial 2 endings i was going to give this a simple but overall positive but mixed review of this game having some overall pacing issues but interesting ideas and some genuinely tense moments until i reached the point where i had to complete all 6 routes revolving around the characters in this game (which are required in Noah to see the true ending) and well... it complicated my thoughts to say the least.

having finished the game now i can safely say that I think takumi is a horrible protagonist, and more obviously a horrible person. this would be less of a problem if by the end the game didn't expect me to believe he is rehabilitated, which is something i did not think was earned through the various character endings where he has to put aside his constant sexual assault fantasies in order to progress the damn plot. this is unforgivable to me, especially considering more times than not these end in him and said girl falling in love. am i supposed to just side step this because he pulls through in the end? that makes him redeemed? in my opinion it doesn't and this game does not earn takumi that reward as it seemingly would like to

safe to say these routes soured me on the game a lot, although i still believed that the actual Writing of hopeful moments in this game were pretty well done (despite contexts making them feel a bit unearned) and i enjoyed a fair bit of ayase and sena's routes. this still results in a overall net negative for me and i'm not sure i can earnestly recommend it with the views i have on the game. people seem to enjoy it tho so idk i'm just a girl on the internet

this is the single most effective piece of conservative propaganda ever created

I actually despise this game so fucking much holy shit what a slog, its crazy how these TROGLODYTES will tell you this shitstain is somehow an improvement on the original and FES because they took inspiration from Persona 4's garbage ass mechanics because they can't deal with the ai you can remove with a pnach file, literally all of the atmosphere and cinematic flare is drained from a game in which those aspects are some of its greatest strengths because all of the ways in which P3 achieved those highs such as its wonderfully moody cutscenes are reduced to blurry images and descriptions; all that's being done is the story being communicated, and that's where it ends. The emotional moments don't hit at all because they're replaced with these ugly fucking sprites and the gravitas is erased, the gameplay is actively less fun than FES, the point and click overworld fucking sucks and drastically worsens the experience, don't get me fucking started on the female protagonist who gets a "SHE'S BETTER THAN THE MALE ROUTE!" because again they tried to steamroll the game with persona fucking 4's ideas, her party links don't add shit and the fact that you can revive a dead character, removing the impact of their death and ruining multiple others arcs is a disgrace, actively ruins any reference to the event after the fact and any impact it could have - this is what i consider one of the biggest issues with Portable, it has no respect for the identity or themes of Persona 3. All of the ""improvements"" to make it more like P4 just make the game worse, it just blindly adds things like social links for the party because ooo P4 did it without considering it properly, they don't even work with the fucking story - Junpei feels far more emotionally mature far earlier than he should for example. Akihiko's adds nothing, Ken's is centred around pedophilia for some reason, why does Koromaru have a social link. Also the remaster is bad, the backgrounds look smeared in Vaseline and the fact that some of the basic UI is very clearly AI upscaled to smudge detail is funny as fuck. This game being the most accessible way to play Persona 3 pisses me off to no end and i hope we get a remake to make it truly irrelevant. Any points I will give it are because it has some of P3's good elements like the characters and the music, but make no mistake FES is the only way you should be playing Persona 3

geckos geckos geckos geckos geckos geckos geckos geckos geckos geckos geckos geckos geckos

The absolute rock bottom of the Persona series, and one of the worst Megaten games as a whole. Every bit of gristle and texture that Persona 3 used to make its otherwise simple combat system meaningful is gone, in favor of being more "convenient." The three distinct types of physical damage are condensed into a single generic type, reducing depth and overemphasizing physical weaknesses/resistances. You now get extra turns from AoE attacks even if one of the enemies you hit isn't weak or is already knocked down, meaning you can mindlessly spam weaknesses without caring about getting your own attacks reflected back at you by half the enemy mob. The reworking of the Shuffle Time system means you can gain immense, completely broken advantages like full level-ups or skills you shouldn't know for the next 10-20 hours, just because you got lucky. Dungeon floors are nothing but long, empty, randomly generated hallways with chests and enemies. And of course, the lack of direct party control that lent so much to P3 mechanically and thematically, is gone, because too many babies who couldn't be bothered to learn the tactics system complained about it.

That's beyond the story being glacially paced, nonsensical, and populated almost entirely by unlikable characters. The pace was already bad in the vanilla game, and Golden goes ahead and adds terrible terrible filler sequences, like your group for some reason forming a band to play a concert at the mall, which is immediately forgotten about after it happens and does nothing but waste an hour of your time. The plot constantly requires characters to act like complete idiots who can't put 2 and 2 together, don't follow up on plot threads until they suddenly become sentient several hours afterward, and never explain anything to anyone until there's basically a gun to their head. Almost every character is intolerable, from Chie screaming constantly and never once coming across as if she even likes her friends, to the only words coming out of Yosuke's mouth ever being "me horny" or "haha ur gay," to Teddie making me want to rip my head off every time he speaks. And of the more likable characters, like Kanji or Nanako, the game basically treats them like garbage.

Social links are STILL bad. They had issues in 3, but they were a brand new major series mechanic, and you would assume those issues would be addressed. Instead, they're worse. They're STILL walkthrough bait, since even a single wrong dialogue choice can sabotage a 100+ hour playthrough and keep you from completing all social links. They're STILL completely scripted and linear, meaning you can form a rank 10 bond with someone even while treating them terribly. They're STILL mostly padding where the first five out of ten ranks are completely worthless nothing scenes. Except now, you can't even reverse the links anymore. Nobody ever gets upset at you. Nothing bad you do to them will ever have consequences. You can get to rank 6 of a link, see someone cry their eyes out about their emotional problems, then abandon them for the next 80 hours of playtime, and they'll never once say anything about how you left them to rot, let alone reverse the bond. And now the stories themselves are decent at best. P3 had some bad social links, but at least it had high points to balance them out.

Thematically, the game hates you. If you have any real criticisms of the society in which you live, then at best, it thinks you're a confused and immature person who needs to figure yourself out. At worst, it thinks you're a misanthropic jackass who should be forcibly removed. Every character starts out wondering if maybe the society and conditions into which they were born are unfair, and they end by making the beautiful realization that, no, actually, they should just suck it up and deal with it. And then it has the gall to have scene after scene where the main characters call the majority of humanity sheeple who refuse to acknowledge the truth. It would rather say that everyone is just dumb because they love TV and that's what's wrong with society, than that maybe people's problems come from the Walmart that just moved into town and is crushing the life out of the local economy. That's what you get.

I give it an extra half star for the visuals being nice and some of the music being pretty good. Other than that, this game blows so fucking bad. Play a real Shin Megami Tensei game like Nocturne or Strange Journey.
