One of my biggest complaints about the previous games is they were just too easy, playing on the hardest difficulty and they were still a breeze. This game not only fixed that for me, but improved the moment-to-moment combat in every way! Granted, I purposefully avoided most of the damage upgrades to make sure it stayed hard. But! They made both the player's kit and the types of enemies far more interesting too! (and annoying lmao). I'm a sucker for all things symbiote so those powers were all super fun, and Miles got even more cool electric powers. And then the enemies! I could go on and on about the enemy design! The hunters that jump between perches, their anti-air electric fields, the symbiotes that dodge, symbiotes that break out of your air combo, not to mention all the cool cinematic boss fights! Every enemy adds their own little twist to the fight and it's so fun and interesting!
The stealth in the game is virtually the same as the previous entries, but you can now make weblines to walk above your targets. While cool, it trivializes an already trivial stealth system. It's hard to tell if the searching behaviors are any improved, sometimes it seems like they see you when you're above, does that mean they look up (which would be cool), or you just happened to be in the edge of their vision cone? I can't tell. I think I just want stealth systems more interesting than "Make noise to make someone walk away, take down target", but that's not this game, which is fine.
Story is for the most part predictable, but there was a lot of cool shots and imagery. And it was still good, Harry being an actual friend to them rather than some rich kid was nice. My wildest hopes were just seeing more goofy stuff like symbiote Miles, symbiote Lizard (again, I'm a sucker for the symbiotes lmao), but I'm not really disappointed that they didn't happen. And those dreams were more than made up for with the fact that they gave Venom wings! It's a flying talking Venom! Amazing, I love it, worth a whole star all on it's own.
Uhhh what else is there to say..... I really thought we'd get some goblin action here, they hinted at it way back in the first game but I guess they're still saving that for later. That's fine, Venom deserves to be the star. Did I mention you get to play as Venom for one segment?! Phenomenal, spectacular, amazing, loved it. They of course also had to do some sequel baiting, meh, I'm sure I'll play it and love it but I'm kinda sick of being teased with plot lines that won't get resolved for 6 years.
I think the one thing that felt a bit lackluster was the side content. What they had was good, similar to the previous games with enemy bases and collectibles etc etc. But the amount of it felt kinda thin, by the time I was finished with the main plot there was next to no side-missions left for me, and I didn't think I had been spending that much time with on them, kinda hard to tell I guess. I don't remember feeling this way with the previous games but I'm also a weirdo who kinda enjoyed Screwball's challenges, so idk. I think something like one more collectible type, challenges quests for Pete, + an extra sidequest plot for Pete and Miles each would've felt good, especially if they didn't unlock till postgame.
Uhhhhh what else..... suits are cool, but I'm weird and hate using anything other than the "cannon" suit for main playthrough. Again, would've been nice for more side content so I had more time in more suits. Oh well, maybe when I inevitably do new game+
I think that's about it.... They improved many things about the gameplay, and had a lot of cool fun stuff in the story, very cool much Spider-Man thumbs-up-emoji
