only used save states for the SNES version (play it ages ago).

the US version puts u back 3 WHOLE LEVELS IF U DIE TO THE FINAL BOSS I DONT CARE
i MIGHT'VE save stated ONCE on dragon quest 2's final boss, i can't remember anymore but i'll leave it here anyway
