Definitely the black sheep of the classic Mega Man series.
It plays and feels entirely different from the rest of the franchise. Too slow, too gimmicky and too cartoony. Mega Man 8 is a game with cool visuals, bosses and interesting ideas, but all of them being super poorly executed.

To be fair, I’m not even sure why I replayed it. I guess after replaying and loving Mega Man 7, and playing its 8-bit demake in the form of Rockman 7 FC, I wanted to try out Rockman 8 FC and be able to compare it with the original game.
Even with this reason in mind, after an entire afternoon playing this to completion, collecting all of the 40 bolts scattered throughout the stages, I’m still getting this feeling: why should I keep replaying this mess of a game?

Well, Mega Man 8 is not entirely bad, of course. I wouldn’t say any of the classic Mega Man games are, to be fair, but 8 is by far the most uninteresting of the bunch.
Even so, it has some redeeming qualities. Some portions of it are truly fun, as well as some boss fights. The most prominent highlight, in my opinion, is Sword Man’s stage, which I genuinely find fun and original enough for this game to me somewhat worthy of being played. Some of the later Wily stages are also fun, since they are more like “pure” Mega Man levels.
The special weapons are also nice and fun to use, and the game tries to make use of most of them. I love when Mega Man games encourage the usage of the obtainable weapons throughout their stages.
But everything else frankly annoys me.

Mega Man moves way too slowly here, and feels much heavier than he should. The level design is extremely failed, full of annoying and repeated enemies that are often very poorly placed throughout their layouts. The gimmicks are, overall, a giant mess, and every time you find yourself in an autoscrolling section, you’ll be sure to find some infamous and infuriating shit.
Besides, there are no Energy Tanks here. Ok, the game can be fairly played without them, but still, it’s obscenely counter-intuitive for the EIGHTH instalment in the series to not have a feature present since the SECOND game, and one that would truly help to alleviate some of the game’s most annoying moments.

Even so, I can’t truly hate this thing. And it’s funny how I actually TRY to hate it as much as I can.
It is a weird game with a very weird feeling throughout its entire length, but it STILL feels like a Mega Man game after all.
Despite being annoying, its definitely among the easier games in the franchise, so even unskilled - and open minded - players can find some enjoyment here.

It was released as a sort of celebration of the series, and I can admire that. Even so, you’ll definitely be better off playing any other game in the series instead of this very mild and failed experience.
