Amazing, gold standard remake. Just a great modernization and so respectful of the original’s identity too, as well as anyone who grew up on it. I can’t really knock for FPS being lower, that’s not an issue, but the text scroll is abhorrently slow, and it’s also unmashable which has slashed replay value a bit. This is a big thing imo as I otherwise genuinely do prefer this remake. I’m even 50/50 on what I prefer from the OST as well. I think its big band, jazzy approach akin to Origami King took some getting used to versus the original’s bouncy sound, but I quickly warmed to it as well as how dynamic the soundtrack was, and all of its new tracks. Particularly fond of them cooking up a battle theme for Fahr Outpost despite it being literally two screens worth of battles. And I’ll get the big thing out of the way, but seeing Vivian accurately depicted in English means the world as a trans person. I never really understood why I felt so fascinated by that when I first heard she was trans in all but the English script, but after realizing I’m a girl, yeah. Yeah it hits. And as 20 years have passed, the script is even kinder to her too. Beldam’s abuse isn’t open transphobia, and there’s nothing like lines saying “oh she could be a boy who thinks he’s a girl!” It’s just up front, they say she realized she was Beldam and Marilyn’s sister, not their brother. It’s so important to see and experience at last. You’ve no doubt seen chuds whining about it as a retcon or localization issue, which is speaking to how little they care about script “purity.” It’s always been about silencing minorities and women to them. Soapbox aside, this was great. Playing it during summer semester and doing a chapter a sitting was wonderful. Really took it in and savored it. It was an absolute treat to return. A triumph for remakes, the Switch, and the Paper Mario series. I’m so glad a new generation can experience this, and is quite debatably getting a stronger version, and absolutely nothing is lost in translation artistically. Between this and SMRPG’s remake, we are so fucking back.
