Almost a year after this game was released, I think this might be the most high-profile assassination of a beloved Nintendo IP since Skyward Sword's with Zelda. You could argue for some of the bullshit Metroid or Star Fox has gotten since then, but I didn't play those because it was too obvious. This one took a while to really get there, catalyzed only by the constant exposure to it since the pandemic started.

The issues I levied against it the first time have either been kept around or alleviated in some way, but the clear sign that my initial hunch was correct of this being a corpse of an Animal Crossing game is how atonal it ends up being? This game is the polar opposite of relaxing to me, it's like being told to Smile While You Work by your boss. By keeping these completely invisible marks of quality around while insisting that The World Is Yours (which, frankly, I don't want it to be) we have arrived at a game that lacks purpose but is also too weak for you to make one for yourself. So, if you're like me, you scramble to find anything worth doing.

And like, whatever, Animal Crossing games can and do eventually feel lifeless by the end of your time with them - what makes this game different? Well, being CONSTANTLY bombarded with screenshots and videos and anecdotes on social media about how this game has the power to connect people in ways only the masters at Nintendo could do... it certainly doesn't help. It was a struggle to care, but people's insistence that everything was fine minus some pesky QoL issues really drove it downwards for me. Though the obvious bends towards modern mobile/F2P design don't help this game's case, it doesn't get substantially better if you can keep your tools forever. It doesn't if you are able to buy multiple things from the catalog every day. What it needs is a fucking pulse.

I hate this game with every fiber of my being

The absolute rock bottom of the Persona series, and one of the worst Megaten games as a whole. Every bit of gristle and texture that Persona 3 used to make its otherwise simple combat system meaningful is gone, in favor of being more "convenient." The three distinct types of physical damage are condensed into a single generic type, reducing depth and overemphasizing physical weaknesses/resistances. You now get extra turns from AoE attacks even if one of the enemies you hit isn't weak or is already knocked down, meaning you can mindlessly spam weaknesses without caring about getting your own attacks reflected back at you by half the enemy mob. The reworking of the Shuffle Time system means you can gain immense, completely broken advantages like full level-ups or skills you shouldn't know for the next 10-20 hours, just because you got lucky. Dungeon floors are nothing but long, empty, randomly generated hallways with chests and enemies. And of course, the lack of direct party control that lent so much to P3 mechanically and thematically, is gone, because too many babies who couldn't be bothered to learn the tactics system complained about it.

That's beyond the story being glacially paced, nonsensical, and populated almost entirely by unlikable characters. The pace was already bad in the vanilla game, and Golden goes ahead and adds terrible terrible filler sequences, like your group for some reason forming a band to play a concert at the mall, which is immediately forgotten about after it happens and does nothing but waste an hour of your time. The plot constantly requires characters to act like complete idiots who can't put 2 and 2 together, don't follow up on plot threads until they suddenly become sentient several hours afterward, and never explain anything to anyone until there's basically a gun to their head. Almost every character is intolerable, from Chie screaming constantly and never once coming across as if she even likes her friends, to the only words coming out of Yosuke's mouth ever being "me horny" or "haha ur gay," to Teddie making me want to rip my head off every time he speaks. And of the more likable characters, like Kanji or Nanako, the game basically treats them like garbage.

Social links are STILL bad. They had issues in 3, but they were a brand new major series mechanic, and you would assume those issues would be addressed. Instead, they're worse. They're STILL walkthrough bait, since even a single wrong dialogue choice can sabotage a 100+ hour playthrough and keep you from completing all social links. They're STILL completely scripted and linear, meaning you can form a rank 10 bond with someone even while treating them terribly. They're STILL mostly padding where the first five out of ten ranks are completely worthless nothing scenes. Except now, you can't even reverse the links anymore. Nobody ever gets upset at you. Nothing bad you do to them will ever have consequences. You can get to rank 6 of a link, see someone cry their eyes out about their emotional problems, then abandon them for the next 80 hours of playtime, and they'll never once say anything about how you left them to rot, let alone reverse the bond. And now the stories themselves are decent at best. P3 had some bad social links, but at least it had high points to balance them out.

Thematically, the game hates you. If you have any real criticisms of the society in which you live, then at best, it thinks you're a confused and immature person who needs to figure yourself out. At worst, it thinks you're a misanthropic jackass who should be forcibly removed. Every character starts out wondering if maybe the society and conditions into which they were born are unfair, and they end by making the beautiful realization that, no, actually, they should just suck it up and deal with it. And then it has the gall to have scene after scene where the main characters call the majority of humanity sheeple who refuse to acknowledge the truth. It would rather say that everyone is just dumb because they love TV and that's what's wrong with society, than that maybe people's problems come from the Walmart that just moved into town and is crushing the life out of the local economy. That's what you get.

I give it an extra half star for the visuals being nice and some of the music being pretty good. Other than that, this game blows so fucking bad. Play a real Shin Megami Tensei game like Nocturne or Strange Journey.

Truly the pinnacle of RPGs here

this is the single most effective piece of conservative propaganda ever created

It's a perfect recreation of the high school experience, complete with that one friend who's really homophobic for no apparent reason that makes you look back and think "wow that guy really was a massive cunt why did I hang out with him" except everyone is homophobic including you

i tried so hard to emulate this on my mom's shitty old laptop but it decided to stop working so i just watched the rest of the cutscenes. it sucks tho

so when i had finished the initial 2 endings i was going to give this a simple but overall positive but mixed review of this game having some overall pacing issues but interesting ideas and some genuinely tense moments until i reached the point where i had to complete all 6 routes revolving around the characters in this game (which are required in Noah to see the true ending) and well... it complicated my thoughts to say the least.

having finished the game now i can safely say that I think takumi is a horrible protagonist, and more obviously a horrible person. this would be less of a problem if by the end the game didn't expect me to believe he is rehabilitated, which is something i did not think was earned through the various character endings where he has to put aside his constant sexual assault fantasies in order to progress the damn plot. this is unforgivable to me, especially considering more times than not these end in him and said girl falling in love. am i supposed to just side step this because he pulls through in the end? that makes him redeemed? in my opinion it doesn't and this game does not earn takumi that reward as it seemingly would like to

safe to say these routes soured me on the game a lot, although i still believed that the actual Writing of hopeful moments in this game were pretty well done (despite contexts making them feel a bit unearned) and i enjoyed a fair bit of ayase and sena's routes. this still results in a overall net negative for me and i'm not sure i can earnestly recommend it with the views i have on the game. people seem to enjoy it tho so idk i'm just a girl on the internet

Do I agree with a lot of the big flaws of this title that people have? Yes. Most likely, yes.

But at the same time... it's undoubtedly quite a stand-out VN title. There's nothing QUITE like Chaos;Head and that's kind of commendable considering how dime a dozen the VN market can, has, and will continue to be. The atmosphere is really great. I played a few VNs with psychological elements, but this was probably one of the more effective and well executed ones. I really did feel like I was looking at the world through the eyes of a paranoid, delusional kid. The game really messes with your head, and it makes it easy to empathize with Takumi's constant episodes since I'm just as unsure of what's real and what's not as he is.

The cast is fine. NoAH does some work at giving the characters much more depth and that's appreciated even if most of them are a bit meh all in all. Especially considering the slog of skipping through most of the game repeatedly just to reach them. Sena and Rimi's routes are at least pretty damn cool though and are big highlights of the whole experience.

I think the story and script is sort of whatever. Nothing really that crazy good to me. But it's the way Chaos;Head PRESENTS that story that makes it quite intriguing and engaging if you open yourself up to it. It's a flawed but interesting title that I think makes up for its shortcomings by having some stand out strengths. It's totally worth playing, especially considering that it's the game that kickstarted one of the most critically acclaimed franchises within the genre.

Also, playing this with Committee of Zero fan patch is an absolute must.

none of you freaks have reading comprehension

psycholonials is a mixing pot mess of authorial self hatred, pandemic and lockdown issues, the slow collapse of the government to fascism as the world burns, fandom and parasocial relationships eating away at you to the core. its a work both deeply autobiographical and tuned into the larger desire for change. a fucking desparate singular need for escape with the chaos of trying to make a world even possible to escape into. it feels pretty clear that the intent is for someone to go in having knowledge of hussie and his work and most likely for you to have a mental image of hussie, and hopefully at least realise that at the end of the day you dont have a picture of hussie in any way and that you dont know him and its weird to assume so from his work. pyscholonials is full on a fucking mess but its one that wants you to go in knowing that and pretty much does the most it can with what it offers you.

It's pretty amazing if you're looking for a story which makes its story beats feel about as amazing in the most Ace Attorney way possible, but my eyes have been opened to how so much about the overarching story straight up is incredibly poorly written and kind of offensive hence I can't go back anymore. It still has redeeming parts tho tbh.
