Quite honestly, I think if I played this on any other platform, it woulda been a 4-star from me. But I didn't! I saw reviews say that it played excellently on Switch. Ugly, sure, but I've been playing on the Switch for 7 years; ugly is the expectation at this point. What I didn't expect, though, was the amount of glitches and frame rate issues the game had.
There's a side quest that I simply can't do! There's no quest description, and the client won't speak to me. I'm not sure if I left the room too quickly in the conversation or what, but I legitimately am just locked out of it.
In the final areas, things got way worse. During the final boss fight, I used the teleport ability right before a mid-fight cutscene began. Then, my screen went black and I was sent back to the start of the fight's first phase. Certain other actions too close to these cut-ins froze me as well, forcing me to take unnecessary damage.
There is a great game here. This is legitimately some of the most fun 2D combat I've ever played, with so much fun creativity in ways that you can combo enemies. The level design is excellent as well, with some fantastic platforming challenges that ramp up as you gain more abilities. It is a fun time... when it works. I assume that's a lot more frequent on other platforms.... but on Switch, it's not often enough.
