like all good puzzle tile-matcheroo games, it's very deceptively simple but in reality has a lot going on mechanically. math as a central mechanic in an arcade game is a very nice concept. brilliant fun with a genuinely challenging campaign VS mode and cute idol girls with ridiculous names galore. hell yeah.

still holds up, and has the best villagers in the series. they are just so joyously and frustratingly unpredictable. outside of the menu being a nightmare to use (handhelds have really spoilt me) and the graphics not being that great this game is still one of the best in the series. it has so many little quirks and charms not seen in any of the others, and feels like the one the devs had the most fun making. they are experimenting, and inviting you into that experimentation with a cosy warm hug. i love it.
definitely a worthwhile addition to the series. graphically, its the best animal crossing has ever looked, it has far more options for customisation and reasons to keep playing, a new location which is always nice, and there was a period of my life where i was sinking hours into it every day and constantly finding new things to see and do, new bugs to catch and new fish to catch. and yet, there is something missing here that was in new leaf, and im not entirely sure what that is. maybe its the bland villagers with the same 10 or so lines of dialogue, maybe its the lack of a bustling shopping district to visit, who knows. its a real shame because other than that this could easily be the best in the series. also this has the best museum in the series and its not even close

a game i respect more than i enjoy. a brilliant concept taken to what initially seem like rather stupidly difficult heights, and then finding out about the multitude of secret worlds and the sheer insanity of the levels as the game goes deeper and deeper was incredible. hell no i did not get that far i struggled with the easiest puzzles in the game so like no way did i figure any of that out. what i did play was fun and wholly unique, but just a bit brain is melt
