Adventures of Dino Riki is an overhead shooter created by Hudson Soft, similar to games like 1943: The Battle of Midway, where the object is to dodge on-screen enemies. Dino Riki can jump or shoot weapons (rocks, axes, boomerangs, and torches) to kill the various enemies around him. Dino Riki can pick up power-ups including speed boosts and wings that enable him to fly over hazards on the ground, as well as weapon upgrades.

A vertical shooter with some platforming. The general gameplay is fine, it just gets frustrating difficult towards the later parts of the game.

Um shoot 'em up com uma curva de dificuldade horrenda e segmentos de platforming igualmente intragáveis.

Platforming in a shmup game?

Don't mind if I don't!

This is one of those games I see a lot of but one I've only seen the first stage of. I was kind of curious seeing as Hudson Soft makes some good games from the older days. It certainly was a twist and turn of events from the small playthrough I did.

So this is actually a shmup and platformer hybrid. For shmup standards it's decent and fun at first but once you get close to the end you start to realize how repetitive the enemy structure is and the game only has three different environments to go through. You can upgrade your weapon though it goes down after each hit and there are other items to help you out.

That said though where this game goes down hard is the platforming, it's awful. If there is one thing you're going to die on most of the time, it's this nonsense. Why would you put freaking platforming, especially with the controls it has and have the most tiny platforms ever? You are going to regret getting speed ups if you do these parts of the game. Really why even have a health meter if there's so much instant death?

The game also only has 4 stages with the last stage having 4 small sections. The bosses are also for some reason the easiest part of the game like why? The difficulty balance here is just not good and can make it seem frustrating.

One thing that's odd is there is this powerup that makes you macho which really reminds me of Amagon for some reason but I could not find this dumb powerup. I know its in the game because the demo had it but I tried so hard to look for it but never did. It probably wasn't even worth it.

Overall I can't really recommend this which is a shame because it could be decent for the time but the platforming kills it. It still has some fun to be had but it would need a bit of a redo to be a hit for me. I could see a game like this being interesting nowadays though if done right but maybe it's best for it to be left alone.

Before I go for now I thought I'd share a couple of things. One thing is the japanese publisher for the japanese version called Shinjinrui: The New Type. It was published by Rix Soft which was their only game ever, I find that really weird. Also when I read the manual for the US version, the game mentions a triceratops as one of the bosses but I swear it's not in the game, I made sure to check places to see if it was in like a second loop or something but it isn't. What's that about? Oh well I guess stuff like that just happens from time to time.

A 2D schmup as basic as they come. Lackluster music, graphics and power ups. Fun for the first little bit until the difficulty ramps up heavily. The platforming sections are awful, especially when you increase your base speed as the controls were not programmed for percise jumping.

Punishing dino-shooting action with light platforming elements. Brutal, but short.
