Contra: Legacy of War is a 3D action game produced by Konami and developed by Appaloosa Interactive that was originally released in 1996 for the PlayStation and Sega Saturn. It was the first of two Contra games that were externally developed by Appaloosa, followed by C: The Contra Adventure in 1998. The game marks the series' jump to three-dimensional graphics and controversial changes in gameplay. Legacy of War was released packaged with a pair of 3D anaglyph glasses, which the game supported. Legacy of War bears the distinction for being the first console game in the series to retain both the Contra title and human characters during its release in Europe and Australia (where the console series has been known as Probotector from the first NES game and up until Contra: Hard Corps). The game was scheduled to be released in Japan as well, but was canceled.

Genuinely dislike this game. The music's interesting, I like the callbacks to Contra: Hard Corps with its boss designs, but oh my goodness this game is the absolute worst to play. There's just no way to get around the way it controls and the feedback with killing your enemies here is non-existent, it is not satisfying one bit. There is that silly warcry when you finish a level and the cutscene with the hilariously indecipherable dialogue you get before the penultimate level, so yeah it does have its redeemable qualities, just that the bad outweigh the good here that's for sure. Folks really mean it when they say this is a bad game, it's absolutely one of the worst games I've ever played and nostalgia won't save it in my case.

It's considerably impressive how poor this game is. The core concept of an overhead run-n-gun isn't folly, but execution is important. Contra: Legacy Of War fails at executing . . . basically everything. The graphics are repugnant, the music is boring, the action is a mess of flat muddy textures with some blocky models, and--worst of all--the controls are horrendous.

This game would have benefited from waiting a couple years so it can utilize the twin analog sticks, but this was being developed when Playstation still had the one basic controller design, thus it was unable to have controls similar to other isometric run-n-gun games such as Smash TV or Total Carnage.

If there's any Contra game to completely avoid, it's this one.

Pretty bad but hella easy compared to old Contra games.
