I was surprised at how much of a departure from the series this is, and it’s a far more fascinating companion piece for it. It’s even more sparsely plotted than the show—its narrative distilled into a two-hander character study—and it is darker than a moonless night. Placing the creative focus on the game’s aural elements leads to some really uniquely powerful moments. Essential for anyone who dug the show

Lain the game : Lain the show :: the Omen trailer : FFXV

what the fuck did i just "play"

This is actually my first exposure to the series, although I started the anime right after finishing this. To call this a game is a stretch, it's not even really a visual novel. It's more of an interactive audiobook / cd rom.

The manner of progression was very abstract and I kinda gave up on beating it until recently. That said, I greatly enjoyed the narrative this game was presenting and felt really smart for piecing it all together. It disturbed and intrigued me and I just love the overall feel of it too.

I had to take multiple week-long breaks to make sure I don't get a stomach ulcer. What a horrific thing this software is.
Apparently 精神分裂病 is the old, offensive term for schizophrenia, but 統合失調症 seems just as offensive to me.

i love reading audio log subtitles for 8 hours

I dont know what else I could say about this game besides the fact that I adore the light it shines on mental illness and the help you can recieve for dealing with said illnesses through the protagonist of Lain herself. By the end while it did worsen my mental health I cant help but appreciate what the game set out to do

THE FUCKING PEAK OF LAIN!!!! :O

it's almost tough to call this a game, but oh boy does it hit you in the face

let's all love lain

Playing this thing felt like exposing myself to a cognitohazard.

I've yet to watch the anime but if it's anything to the game, wowwwieeee I'm really going to love this. This isn't a videogame as much as a series of backloggs but even still, it's amazing

I'm not comfortable putting a rating on this, as I still feel as though theres more to explore within this game than I've gotten to, I really liked it. But I also wholeheartedly believe it'll take me a long while before I revisit this... it really messed me up the night i saw that final cutscene

she's just like me (insane , god complex , doesn't go outside)

this game is so fucking clunky but in a good way. maybe its the ps1 jank liker in me but something about being forced to play at a crawling pace and getting drowned in a hundred audio files files gave me a very intimate-feeling look into her psyche. fuck all menuing criticism it just works.
(do be sure to find a content warning for this game if you want to play it though because it can be outlandishly cruel)

I find this game (if you can even call it that) so unusual and dense that I don't really know how to talk about properly. It really shook my heart and made me feel a certain way even if I didn't entirely understand what was going on. I'm still sort of reeling from the experience. Lain PSX presents a lot of existential questions and scenarios that I found deeply moving and disturbing at times. With how intimate the diaries and files are in this game, Lain and Touko come across to me as some of the most believable and human characters I've seen in a game. It really showcases how profoundly loneliness and isolation can affect a person's mind, especially a child growing up. The game makes a lot of use of psychiatric terminology to go about this. It clearly feels very well researched. Never gonna forget this game.

If you love the anime, I urge you to play this game. If you love the game, I urge you to watch the anime. Many of their themes and ideas are tightly intertwined and certain concepts that are mentioned or can be inferenced in one medium are expanded or elaborated upon in the other. The two are definitely most rich when experienced hand in hand.

one of the most wild, profound, interesting, terrifying, depressing and miles ahead of its time works of fiction i have ever experienced, one which is far more relevant today than it was at the time. just about every single topic you could think of is covered by its story, from technology to romance to philosophy to mental illness to purpose to existentialism to breasts. compared to the anime, this game is not only much more linear and obvious in its story progression, but this lain winds up far more psychopathic (which the less said about the better) despite seeming very normal at first. she has no one to lean on here, never figuring out what the knights are and how deep their rabbit holes go, with few mentions of crucial components of the anime like protocol 7. it all culminates in a brutal and deeply unfortunate ending.

it's a very disturbing game, a bleak look at a lonely girl's utter mental decline of her and those surrounding her, and certain cutscenes from its ending will never leave me.

you navigate this unbeliveably well told story with a menu designed, created and coded by gibbons.

No matter where you go, everyone’s connected.

LET'S ALL LOVE LAIN

don't play this if you suffer from any sort of existential dread, this game really exacerbates those feelings

A fractured story told through audio logs, diary entries, and the occasional short video clip. It tackles similar themes to the anime of identity, memory, and mental illness, but in a much more directly psychological fashion, with less of the tangents into the outright weird and conspiratorial. It's a more personal story, diving into the minds of its two main characters as they, and their relationship, evolve over time.

I consider this an essential experience not just for Lain fans, but fans of psychological media in general.

And all the fears you hold so dear
Will turn to whisper in your ear

Gosto muito de Lain mas esse jogo é boring demais e muito lento, achei péssimo.

i played this on my school chromebook
