Playing this as my second Resident Evil, shortly after RE4, I was confused and disappointed. Even though this was a remake of the original game, the controls still felt like a mess. Where was the action? Over time I've come to appreciate the older games in the series for what they are now, so this one feels ripe for a replay and reassessment soon.
It's a really solid game, and while I really don't think it replaces the original (they set out to do and accomplish different things), if prompted between only playing one of the two games, I would have to choose this one. That being said, the back half of this game still sucks ass and is dragged out even longer here, so Mikami looses a star for that.

For my first experience with the series, REmake 1 leaves an incredible first impression. I never expected to feel the amount of tension in games that I did with this one. With how the controls are clunky, the zombies AREN'T mere fodder for you to blast through and instead are carefully-placed obstacles that you need to make the decision on whether or not they are worth spending valuable ammunition on or if you can consistently juke away from them without needing to expend anything, the game has this overarching feeling of fear all throughout. And not the dehabiliating "cry in the corner and go pick something else" feeling of fear, but more an adrenaline rush that compels you to stay on your toes at all times. For that reason, this game is definitely something you've gotta check out even if you aren't a big horror fan and is one of my favorite entries in the whole series.
This game captivated me with it's atmosphere and art direction. It's really tense and quite terrifying at times. The pre-rendered backgrounds and set camera angles really do the job. The music and sound design are wonderful too. That being said, I really don't like metroidvanias. I get their appeal, but they don't work for me. Running around, getting lost, missing crucial things, revisiting the same locations over and over again - not really my thing. Once I started using a guide I started to have much more fun, but I couldn't shake the feeling that I'm missing part of the experience by doing that. Hence the 3.5 star rating.
I have no idea what to rate this, because I feel like rating it as its aged to sin is not reflective of the experience I had, but rating it as I have it now would not reflect how... unfortunate the gameplay has gotten. Play without the tank controls in the modern versions and the game is way too easy, but they are hell to use. And the constant, CONSTANT door loading screens after the trick has worn off. I don't know. I loved it. I don't love it anymore, but think it's cool. Idk.
Liked it a lot more than I had expected. Was never really all that into horror games (most of my exposure to the genre prior was just ammo for loud YouTube people at the time) but I really enjoy the exploration aspect of this game. The whole mansion has a satisfying flow to it that fits well with the whole theme of just unfolding the mystery behind it all.
A really amazing remake and doesn't make the old version any less worth playing. All of the new they added without taking away is really amazing to see and the visuals are amazing to behold.
Something you could go back to time and time again because it's also not very long either. Makes going through a new game fun every time just to see how fast you can beat it. Much like other games in the series more or less.
No fishing- but you do get to drain a big ass aquarium(?) and drain it so the shark and little sharks die without giving you an issue. Really missed the chance to have some fishing.

I played a good amount of this one, but it really lost me in the later parts of the game. The game became too tedious and I dropped it because I wasn't enjoying it. The early part in the mansion was a lot of fun, but I stopped enjoying it after that. The puzzles became a little too obtuse and the combat isn't anything special. It's a really good game for its time but I don't know if I ever want to finish it.
