Great concept with good platforming mechanics, except the 3D sections

A very great game. Yes, it gets tedious at times and frustrating at others, maybe a bug here or there. But the overall game, story and characters are amazing. You should definitively give it a try - and don't give up if you have to play this one scene like 10 times, I promise its worth it on the long run.

Eu me diverti absurdamente, fiquei extremamente entretido e digo que valeu bastante a pena.

American Arcadia is a testement to how much I'm willing to tolerate gameplay that's making me utterly miserable for an extremely good story

I've seen some negative reviews that say this would be better as a TV show but I don't agree with that either. There are moments where the dual protagonists you switch between work very well and the story is definitely suited to a video game. But goddamn did I find a lot of it tedious

Trevor's gameplay is platforming, usually while under the pressure of being chased. However, any mistake is often an immediate game over and restart. Sometimes you aren't given much time to react, leading to a lot of monotenous trial and error. Plus, characters are pretty chatty, so enjoy hearing the same voiceline. I'm not gonna beat around the bush - I thought a lot of these sections sucked absolute shit. Angela's first puzzle sections and puzzles are...maybe more interesting, but you can run into the same issues there too.

There are moments where the gameplay is okay - there's a sequence very near the end that I won't spoil, which is fantastic. There's also another bit early on where you're in first person as Angela. On one monitor, you're watching Trevor and have to avoid him being detected with the WASD keys. On another monitor, you must use your mouse to guide Angela's eyes to the correct answers of a quiz while being grilled by a distracting Security member. WHY WAS THIS ONLY UTILIZIED ONCE???? IT WAS SO GOOD COMPARED TO EVERYTHING ELSE??

As for the story, it's basically The Truman Show Made By Walt Disney - and while there's no subtly there, it's a really strong premise with a lot of intrigue that wraps up very nicely, with a particularly strong moment towards the end

Ultimately, I recommend American Arcadia but I also think it could have been a lot better

best use of the word fuck in a video game

what do you do if a society deems your freedom to be entertainment? as trevor says, "Leave me the fuck alone!"

Good voice acting, good writing, a great ending, and a neat blend of platforming and puzzles/stealth.

I just wish that the gameplay 'evolved' in some way throughout the game. Aside from a few really neat segments, most of the platforming isn't anything special and there's not much more to it than "sometimes you need to drag an object over to get over something". Additionally, I went in with the expectation that there'd probably be more puzzles and stealth than there actually was (unless all the aforementioned 'drag object to get over' parts count as puzzles?)
It doesn't really ruin the experience, especially since you're mostly playing for the story itself, but it does keep it from being up there with other self-proclaimed "Puzzle" games.

American Arcadia is a single-player multi-perspective puzzle platforming game that takes you through the story of Trevor Hills, an ordinary guy living his mundane life in the city of Arcadia. An extremely compelling story, the gameplay consists of 2D sidescrolling puzzle platforming and 3D puzzle sequences that for the most part works very well. A fleshed out world, interesting aesthetic, compelling narrative, and incredible voice work make this an extremely satisfying game that I think everyone should experience! There's a few moments of frustration where one might need to trial and error but for the most part, American Arcadia is a pretty easy and seamless experience.

I liked the aesthetic of this game. The art design was really neat. I also really liked Trevor, even though he's voiced by my mortal enemy. I enjoyed the ending of the game the most, especially the Live Chat, I thought that was a good bit.

NOW FOR ALL ITS FUCKING PROBLEMS.
- There are way too many cutscenes. They interrupt you every 5-10 minutes, and the audio is too loud in some of them.
- There are lots of bugs. I was tackled and arrested mid air by an Interceptor.
- The first person sections are not fun.
- The puzzles are all tedious and feel like padding instead of being fun and giving you a sense of accomplishment.
- There is too much world building for such a simple concept. It's The Truman Show made by Walt Disney, but they insist on reminding you every chance they get.
- They over explain every concept in the world except the most ridiculous ones, like oh yeah tell me about the live streaming app, but don’t explain how the cameras work or the dome itself. YES GAME I'M SO STUPID THAT YOU NEED TO SPEND 5 MINUTES EXPLAINING A LIVE STREAMING APP.
- All the characters are kinda shit (Except Trevor)
- This game refuses to let you miss any reference it makes, like your boss at the start of the game is ‘Lumbergh’ from “Office Space.” I was like oh that's funny and then 5 minutes later someone is like “OH YA LIKE FROM OFFICE SPACE.”
- My game crashed twice, which was fine because the checkpoint system is decent but like look at it come on.
- The game recommends you use a controller. They lied to me. Do not use one.
- At the end you should’ve been able to choose whether you stay or leave. Would be in line with Trevor gaining autonomy and agency but it would kinda ruin the game. Still sucks though

One last thing. During the Viso-o-rama section (which is like a dream sequence) they tell you to break your routine. In front of you is a card reader that opens the gate from your job at the beginning of the game. You use it like 3 times in the opening so I thought “oh I’ll walk past it, that makes sense.” But nothing happened, I had to punch in to progress. This is the way the game handles everything. Don’t think, just drool and hit the buttons you ape.

Although I jumped up and cheered when Trevor said “LEAVE ME THE FUCK ALONE.” That ruled.

American Arcadia is a game that wears it's inspirations on it's sleeves. The comparisons to The Truman Show are inevitable and well earned. AA updates the concept of a person discovering they're living in a TV show and modernizes it in a post social media world where the greatest crime is to be boring. While there will be comparisons to 1984 and the game drops the phrase "Orwellian" I found myself constantly thinking back to Orwell's professor Adlus Huxley's "A Brave New World". American Arcadia isn't a perfect game, but it's marriage between 2D action platformer and 1st person puzzle game keeps things fresh for it's entire run time. The twists and turns serve the story well and work to deliver the societal critiques intended. Overall, American Arcadia is a game that made me think and made me really want to talk to people about it, and it delivers a story and soundtrack that more than carries its runtime.

The destination makes the journey worthwhile.

i wish this was real (i have not learned anything from my experience with the game)

really fun and creative gameplay, and a pretty great story, but suffers from obnoxious "social media pills" and "pikachu using a human on a phone as a horse" messaging and investing really heavily on the worlds most predictable plot twist
still really good just kinda stupid sometimes

Everyone knows this is based incredibly heavily off Truman Show, but even though I could see their inspiration from a mile away, it was enjoyable.

I especially liked the switching between the "interview" and the "action" - great way to make the narrative seem interesting. The town and its premise were also nice.

I can't say it was fun to do segments where I had to control both characters at one - one non-spoilery segment, for example, required me to control the protagonist using one set of buttons, and simultaneously control a different character (that controls a CCTV camera) - the idea behind it is good, but it requires a lot of fast micromanagement, to the point where it is detrimental to the fun.

The gameplay is mostly pretty basic, with only a couple interesting puzzles. Art direction with its juxtaposition of 1970's and modern day is nice. Voice acting is really, really good, Yuri Lowenthal slayed.
Characters were good enough, though Angela was really annoying. The meta-commentary on how capitalism consumes counter-movements into itself is a nice twist on a Truman show plot.

shallow characters, boring puzzles, exposition, exposition and more exposition. the most fun I had playing this game was trying to do bunny hops while using trevor.
also I HATE it when white people write "hispanic" characters and all they do is make them speak spanish at random every once in a while, yeah, remind me that you are puerto rican, yeah, love it when they use it to excuse when the character doesnt have a personality, just make them a minority, that will work, that will make them interesting!
atleast the ending is good, which is not a big deal since is very underwhelming and not worth it for what you have to go through

One of the best endings I've seen in a while for a game.

It's a game that made me happy about completing it, there a lot of good ideas with different quality in executions, but in the end it's all worth it.

saw that semi ramblomatic where yahtzee is like "go play it real quick" so i did
fucking fire

he´s literally just some guy

Yet another poorly optimized Unreal Engine game. The story got a little confusing by the end. But the rest of the game absolutely fucks.

American Arcadia was a pretty fun experience.
The gameplay was really dry generic running around, while sometimes pushing a crate around to reach the next platform, with some easy minigames mixed in.
The truman show story and the dual protagonists, one playing as a side scroller, and one in first person, were fun enough gimmicks to keep me engaged through the pretty short story. That being said, the writing wasn't good enough to make it really worthwhile. All in all, it was a very middling game, but with a very unique gimmick.
