It is very hard to love a game that does not love itself and tries to be more than it is. Assassin's Creed Revelations feels like a DLC that should have been part of Brotherhood after launch despite the size of the city that it takes place in.
The city is a major highlight of this game as it looks stunningly good for a game from 2011, and it has a really charming atmosphere that elevates the experience. Revelations also has a darker theme as it deals with death, aging and losing focus over time, and it has some decent writing that supports these themes but overall, the writing in general feels a bit edgy this time around.
The lack of side missions and things to do further makes this adventure pretty boring at times as you barely can interact with the world while you travel between main missions. In previous games, I was constantly reminded and motivated to interact with the world through events and missions but Revelations lacks these.
The last thing I wanted to talk about that I did not like at all is the clunky nature of the combat, making it very unsatisfying to engage with enemies. Overall, Revelations does everything worse and still manages to improve upon one thing, that is the saving grace of this game: the parkour.
The hookblade and ziplines were great additions, and they really made travelling around fun and exciting. Some of the main missions even uses tombs, which are mostly parkour segments, and they are the most fun out of every mission.
Overall, the Ezio trilogy is mostly ridden with fans who are more nostalgic than objective with the games, but I cannot blame them. The writing (so far) is one of the strongest aspect of these games, and all of them are charming in their own way.

while it does lack the summer-action-comedy charm of the previous two, and the assassin's creed itself is shat over, and desmond's new face looks really odd, and the actual plot itself is like alright (i feel the same way about the previous two games though), i FUCKING love exploring istanbul, i FUCKING love dilf ezio, i FUCKING love the hookblade, and i FUCKING love that this game's about ezio and altair's fates specifically. (god that scene is so fucking cool).
i do wish i had more incentive to using the other bombs, instead of the same load-out each time, i could feel the assassin's creed fatigue setting in, and there's a bunch of little nitpicks here and there, but every time i think about the "assassin's creed theme" that gets used so often throughout, or of literally every scene with altair, or about yusuf or zofia, or how well-designed istanbul is for parkour, or how wonderfully colorful but still subtle the game's art design is, i just can't help but overlook the issues i do have. i get taken back to the specific time i played the game in. the writing has issues, but god it's so full of emotion man. if only things didn't go to shit after this...

I never played Revelations when it came out and now I know what a huge mistake that was. It really resonated with me. While maybe a bit too short overall, I think it easily has the best gameplay in the Ezio trilogy and the same goes for the top tier soundtrack. You can really feel the writers love and care for its world, story and characters. Ezio and Altair are so well written here and their conclusion is perfect.
Constantinople is a great parkour playground (maybe the best), the addition of ziplines is cool an all but the introduction of the hook blade, is just genius. It's really nice of the developers to throw Ezio a bone in his old age, extends grab ledge range and speeds up building ascents without completely compromising parkour gameplay.
The AC 1 to Revelations parkour system never even reached its full potential. After this they started simplifying parkour in AC 3 and then never looked back, they didn't try to make a great system even greater but rather reinvent a wheel that was never broken by simplifying it to oblivion, killing any creativity and freedom these games had.
It just leaves a bittersweet feeling knowing this was the peak of Assassin's Creed and always will be...unless Ubisoft finally get a clue. (they won't)
Also, the gameplay in Desmond's Journey and The Lost Archive can absolutely get in the bin

Assassin's Creed Revelations has some seriously cool moments, especially if you're invested in Ezio and Altaïr's stories. Exploring Constantinople is awesome, and the hookblade adds a fun twist to the parkour. But man, the tower defense minigame sucks, the plot can get a bit convoluted, and some of the side missions feel like filler. Overall, if you're a big fan of the series, it's worth it for the closure, but it's definitely not the strongest entry.
