Another example of a video game homage done right, along with a nice amount of content for the price. The game is also getting solid dev support as of 2024.

Hardcore Anti-Gravity Racing. Possibly the best one out there right now.
Ship balance and AI tuning irks me somewhat though. I feel like only a small sliver of the roster is worth using.
NX2000, my beloved...
It has custom BGM support. Load up a folder with your favorite adrenal infused tunes and prepare to rocket off at speeds that will test the very limits of human reaction time.

scratches that wipeout itch

wait i always sucked at wipeout

wow this game slaps i have no fucking clue as to what im doing please help me

feels like putting someone who never played a tony hawk game on THUGPRO

classic ps1 wipeout brought to life on modern day PCs

simply fantastic, no words to how much value and fun you get for this, along with all its mods

wipeout's y2k future racing aesthetic brought to peak form, creates a beautiful kind of tunnel-vision

core racing gameplay is amazing, but can be VERY hard

I played wipeout so there's nostalgia involved beyond loving 3d psx graphics when I say this is one goodass game.

when looking for modern interpretations of agrav racers, most people will point you to a couple different options. BallisticNG, Pacer/Formula Fusion and the two Redout games. while both Redouts are decent games, BallisticNG is by far and away the best game of the three, and outclasses even the games it emulates.

the first thing to understand about BallisticNG is that the core of the game is, to put it blatantly, a copy of the feel of the original wipEout games, particularly 2097 and 3. in this, the game is sublime - it honestly feels better than those games, mostly because you can run this on near everything, but also because it not only replicates the feelings of 2097 and 3, but expands them.

a greater variety of ships (with some having completely different handling characteristics), dedicated spec series with their own ship types, ag motorcycle racing, and series with the physics of the later wipEout Pure/Pulse/HD style. this is on top of a truly massive track roster (that only becomes bigger with updates and dlc) and modding support, allowing for custom made ships and tracks.

in all honesty, its hard to find fault with BallisticNG. its cheap, frequently updated, easy to run, greatly customizeable and moddeable and has a wealth of content. give it a shot. its really great

Very much a Wipeout 2097 clone not just in visual style but mechanically as well. It feels great to play because of this with the high skill floor and ceiling that the franchise was known for.

Best wipeout clone I've ever played, put this game on everything and keep support going for it please.

The difficulty gets unfair as you keep going

Fast-paced anti-gravity racing game that is largely a clone of WipEout 3/SE and 2097 from the WipEout series.

In comparison to most games like this there is more focus of the vertical movement of your ship as it gains height from bumps and controlling ship nozzle to match the track or control elevation.
Like WipEout normal race modes have combat elements where you pick up weapons from pods and managing these properly are key to catching up to AI opponents.

While being based on an older game in terms of core gameplay much of the convenience features and additional game modes from modern titles are added. This makes BallisticNG maybe a more comprehensive game and value for money than any of the official series as more content is added.
Things players might dislike about the WipEout series are the same here, punishing narrow tracks that can 'pinball' the player from slight bad control. Somewhat indirect/floaty ship control with heavy use of 'airbrakes'. (still largely depends on ship)

For fans of this type of game the campaigns can be a really fun challenge. Going for all Platinum medals is tougher than anything in the WipEout series but not by too much to be frustrating. The level of polish from the devs on the stages and campaigns is good enough to compete with the bigger studio titles. The soundtrack is also surprisingly solid and fits the game very well, having been polished further since release.

This is mostly a single-player experience with a large campaign and grinding to improve your times on each track in time trial or speed lap. Online multiplayer has been fleshed out in recent patches and works well but with the size of the playerbase don't expect to run into random players.

This game has been in development for a long time and has multiple expansions. At this point with Outer Reaches DLC the game has plenty of unique gimmicks of its own and a ton of content in terms of tracks and ships.
With workshop and mod support there are plenty of quality fan-made tracks and ships that should continue even when official expansions and major updates stop coming out.

Recommended as a very solid racing game that is a lot of value at this price. But being aimed at a hardcore audience (more than WipEout), the punishing nature of tracks and game modes having combat racing elements may be a turnoff to some.

If you're checking out BallisticNG, you already know what you're looking for. It's Wipeout. In fact, it's so Wipeout that if Sony remembered that they owned the IP this would probably get cease and desist orders. The ships are nearly identical and even the visual design of Zone Mode is the same.

None of this is a bad thing. If Sony isn't going to make more Wipeout games then somebody else might as well!

Stuck on a dnb playlist and sat and played this solidly for about 3 hours without even meaning to! I have some minor frustrations with how progression is handled at times but I'll ABSOLUTELY take it over the alternative of it being fucking beslimed with microtransactions, something that racing games particularly have A Problem with.

A great love letter to Wipeout. In fact it's so similar to Wipeout I'm almost baffled Sony hasn't taken legal action but I guess they'd have to care about wipeout to do that. Great sense of speed and aesthetics, a decent amount of tracks substantially boosted by the steam workshop which has plenty of high quality modded tracks, and some fun challenges make it a great time. I also liked how simple it was to play my own custom music in the game and it ran really well too. My only real issue with the game is the difficulty spike in the time trial challenges which felt absurd compared to the other challenges. While I was still cruising through the races and zone challenges with a nice difficulty curve, the time trials quickly required everything I had just to barely get bronze after the first two or so. Also a minor complaint but having to move to the back button to get out of every menu instead of just being able to click B was annoying.

A Beautiful Wipeout Tribute. Please play this underrated game.

I never played wipeout so there's no nostalgia involved beyond loving 3d psx graphics when I say this is one goodass game.
