I love Centipede. There's evil bugs that spawn mushrooms, and spiders fly all over the screen like boing boing boing boing. Better controls on the arcade machine, the ball kind of reminds me of like those top-down fighters, like top-down shooters. I don't know, it feels like top-down shooters should use that. Where you're like a little plane and try to shoot other planes.

Well... it's better than Space Invaders.

One of the very first games I played as a kid and still play it at 32 and still get the same kick out of it as I did back then. One of the early essences of shooters and even if it gets frustrating, I still am having a blast. That’s a true game right there imo. Instant classic.

Played as part of Atari 50.

Pretty underwhelmed by this one. The mushrooms are entirely unsatisfying to shoot at, and the spiders can sometimes just run straight towards you and kill you in one shot. Really the only thing going for this one is the trackball controller (which I could only experience by using a mouse) but it's hardly the only shootemup that controls that way anyways. Surprisingly sauceless for how well known it is

Yet another Atari arcade game clearly inspired by Space Invaders, although that's not necessarily a bad thing here. It's the traditional shoot 'em up, this time with an added gimmick where your enemy can split where shot at, adding a bit more challenge to the player by encouraging shots to land at the edges of the centipede. A creative idea and a nice refresh of the formula, but not a significant breakthrough.

A neat twist on Space Invaders where your "bases" hinder you and keep the gameplay a little randomized depending on where you shoot the centipede.

Space Invaders for people who do drugs.

Centipede is a good game, but it's much more fun with a trackball.

This game is really fun. I love how it starts off at a decent pace before suddenly going Mach 5 and turning it into something fast-paced and hectic. The kamikaze bugs that divebomb you add a tense challenge.

Arcade:

Don't really need to go into too much detail but it's Centipede, shoot the centipedes body while trying to destroy barriers to make it easier to access killing the centipede, while avoiding giant spiders that attempt to kill you from the sides and jumping about. It's a classic I really enjoyed, but I personally prefer the 2600 version, but the original is still amazing.

Played of Atari 50.

An iconic one to be sure but also kind of strange. The centipedes breaking to form barriers is an interesting idea.

An okay SPACE INVADERS riff that is somewhat undone by the rate of fire for your little guy. It has the common only-one-bullet-on-the-screen thing, which always sucks, but it's made to feel even worse here (paradoxically) by the inclusion of rapid fire by holding the button. This tempts you to just spam to try to get the most shots off as quickly as possible and/or to destroy the multiple hit point having obstacles, but since the playfield is long and the main enemy starts at the way back and (sometimes quite slowly) makes its way forward, you can find yourself firing your bullet in a rush without thinking, missing everything, and then watching it take forever to leave the screen while you're helpless against the closer enemy type, or while the Centipede moves somewhere else completely. It's really only a half-second of useless time or whatever, but it makes for a gross herky-jerky rhythm to your attacks that is a constant frustration. It would actually be a lot better if holding the button regulated your shots to a slow and steady pace.

That niggling issue is a shame, because the general design is sound and the look is cool. It's different enough from its contemporaries without being overly complicated. Just wish the shooting could feel better.

P.S.: This is well-known as one of the early arcade successes with female players specifically, and this collection, at least, credits that to the accomplished art and the color choices (which are both excellent). But ... it's the dicks, right? The mushrooms! There's a bunch of dicks all over the screen! And the player ship or whatever is a little dick, too! That's definitely it.

I'm not sure how many times I've played Centipede, but in the last couple months I've been playing it again in the Atari 50 package. I wanted to at least get back to where I was regularly hitting another credit and topping the default leaderboard. It's kinda nice to once again be confident that I could put my initials up on a machine that gets restarted every night.

Centipede is an excellent early arcade game. I think that some of the ways that it uses randomness are probably still textbook today, or at least they should be. The way the board becomes increasingly dense in interactions between the player and the centipedes is a good way for complexity to emerge. The fun, as I see it, is in managing that complexity for as long as possible. The additional obstacles of jumping spiders and dive-bombing beetles that further gum up the works also require more on-the-fly adjustments.

It's a well-designed game that's just tricky enough to reward repeated attempts as players get to grips with the strategy of it. I can't see myself wanting to truly master it, but I understand how it could get its hooks in.

te quiero mucho centipede

It sure is Centipede. Pretty fun for a few minutes but there isn't really anything here that makes me want to come back to it. The analog movement feels a bit shoehorned in to me, but I might feel differently playing on an actual trackball.

Of early shootemups, this is probably my favorite. It takes the natural stress of the escalating speed from Space invaders and makes the course more treacherous based on your own actions, thus making the game a constant balance of undoing your own hellscape as well as completing your objectives. Good friction.

It's definitely Centipede, I have no idea what else to say tbh.

How did it take until now for me to finally play Centipede? I dunno, but now I see I wasn't missing out on too much. It's a good game though, you just shoot the centipedes and that's about it, but really, that's all you need most of the time for an arcade classic.

Game #170

What's innovative about Centipede in the time period of slide and shoots is designing the game so that the player clearly communicated direct actions to effect the movement of incoming enemy ships. Prior to Centipede ships moved based on information such as player placement or number of enemies left. However, the transformation of enemy ships into mushroom blocks create a new depth of strategy to the game that I find to be very refreshing after playing a decent amount of 1979/1980 slide and shoots. On top of this, Centipede plays with rhythm depending on the length of centipedes which is an extremely smart designed communication. It also just has a nice palette, it plays with pastels and deeper tones that I think are pleasant. Overall, this is a very smart evolution in the genre.

Always figured I wouldn't like it, so imagine my shock when I played it and found that I did, indeed, like it.

I went to a barcade when I turned 21, and this was the first one I played.

Actually reminds me a little bit of Space Invaders and feels pretty fun to play barring one real weird quirk with how the bullets shooting seemingly being only one one on the screen at the time or something because of the rate of fire being faster shooting at something close compared to far and the game taking a bit before you can shoot again. It kinda just throws you off a bit but still a solid experience despite that.

Bem daora a forma de jogar, só achei que ficou bem repetitivo quando vc chega nas fases mais acima
