pretty solid little platformer. i was very excited for this one after it was announced that yacht club would be publishing and while its know shovel knight its still pretty great. abilities are fun to use and the movement is pretty good. bosses were also a highlight and all of them were pretty fun to fight. just overall a solid game
Don't get me wrong, Cyber Shadow is a well executed 8bit platformer with an amazing feeling of movement, great visuals and a memorable soundtrack.
Fundamentally, it does one thing not very well: Challenge. Sure, it's a "git gud" game but in the wrong way. I'd say until chapter 6 it's challenging but still fair. Later on, especially in chapter 8, it's just pure frustration. Checkpoints are not placed well and deaths feel really cheap.
I hate to shelf or abandon games, but I had to do it here.
Just shows me how important it is for difficult games to still keep a sense of fairness (looking at you, FromSoft titles).

This throwback platformer, harkening back to TMNT and Ninja Gaiden, proved to be an early favorite for 2021. Challenging without being cheap, the action throughout requires precise timing and the bosses demand full use of your small but essential ninja-based equipment. Combined with a brilliant soundtrack, it’s an easy recommendation for those looking for entertaining old-school action with a dash of modern convenience.

I kind of wanted this to be the last game I beat for the year so that I could start and end the year with Ninja Gaiden/Ninja Gaiden-likes but I have other games I plan on beating soon so lol. I do think I would have liked this more if I had played it before trying out The Messenger, because that game does so much to subvert its genre that it makes a game like this (just the platforming and action elements fine tuned as much as possible) seem worse than it actually is. Overall I think the game is just, really good, with my only real issue being that it starts a bit slow and sandbags, showing off its most fun and interesting ideas in the second half of the game. Also the movement until you start unlocking more and more stuff like sprinting can feel a bit slow but once you unlock your full moveset, the game feels incredible to play. Definitely worth your time if you are a fan of the genre.

A solid 2D platformer!
Music was good, the visuals are also good in general, although the cutscenes specifically look insanely good!
Gameplay is what you'd expect of a 2D ninja platformer. You walk, you slash, and you unlock a few tools for extra movement.
The power-ups and new skills you get are really fun though! My favorites were the dash slash with insane forward movement, and the "swag blade" A rolling yoyo that spins around you. It actually has momentum implemented, so you can hit it or jump to shift the arc it travels around you! I got much more I liked, but I don't wanna spoil it all.
Story was definitely trying to be at least a little more than a footnote, but eh... It wasn't doing it for me. I just wanted to keep playing.
Game felt more on the easy side. Difficulty can spike up a little sometimes, but it never felt impossible or not doable, and you can shred bosses really quick once you know the pattern

every so often a game like Cyber Shadow manages to capture that special feeling of 8-bit gaming so perfectly. Made by a single developer, Aarne Hunziker, and with the help of a publisher who also managed to capture the NES magic in a bottle in Yacht Club Games, Cyber Shadow is just as enjoyable as any of the legendary titles in two-button gaming.
