It was my intention to play this game for my marathon (I mean honestly does anyone actually play this game for any other reason than pure obligation?) but because my shitty Wii U disc reader refuses to recognize the completey spotless disc I guess I have to skip it now. I know I'm dodging a bullet here, but honestly I can't help but be a bit dissapointed tbh, if Nintendo was actually good at preserving their games, even the bad ones, I wouldn't have had to skip another game on this marathon like this.
Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash offers the core tennis gameplay you'd expect from the series, with colorful visuals and responsive controls. However, it suffers from a severe lack of content; modes are sparse, the roster feels limited, and its main gimmick, Mega Battles, feels disruptive rather than fun. While local multiplayer with friends can create some enjoyable moments, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash ends up as a disappointingly barebones experience within the franchise.
I'll settle for a 1 star rating instead of 0.5 because at least the core tennis gameplay is still... passable, I suppose? But what a letdown overall. Bare bones in terms of content, still heavy on gimmicks that slow the pace of gameplay & just a lackluster experience when compared to its predecessors. Mario Tennis for N64 came out 15 years prior & it blows this game out of the water.
This is a great example what happens when you have the structure of a good game but your publisher really wants a release for the holidays.
While the core tennis mechanics are as solid as ever and the character graphics delight, there is very little to Ultra Smash. No tournament mode, replaced by a simple knockout challenge. Only one simplistic mini game. Unlockable courts are here, but they're just swaps of the same basic arena instead of truly unique locales. The online is barebones, with no proper options to play with friends. Perhaps some more interesting original mechanics would have pushed this game forward, but the jump shot and Mega Mushroom add very little. Ultra Smash is a hollow experience. It is not bad on a technical level and the base tennis game play is still fun, but too much feels missing to make this one worthwhile.
I do find it cute that the green Sprixie Princess from 3D World was an unlockable character, though. A shame she's stuck in this game and not included in Aces.

I'm a big fan of the Mario Tennis series and this particular entry is my least favorite one. Not sure if releasing this game late into the Wii U lifecycle had anything to do with the lack of content and the overall low-effort feel on behalf of Nintendo.
Graphics are colorful and appropriate for a Mario Tennis game but the overall gameplay and feel for the game feel off, rushed, and low-effort.
