A fall backwards from 2, especially with the roster being one of the weakest in the franchise. The gameplay is the biggest/best standout, although at times the unbalanced nature of the roster makes it tough to find a fighter that'll leave you with a fair-feeling chance of grinding through the towers.
Worst roster of the OT by a country mile, and it lost a lot of the previous 2 game’s charm. Fatalities are sillier than usual, and they’re fighting on the streets and in banks? Idk, it’s cool they graduated past a tournament for the story and an invasion is happening in a setting that feels familiar in order to up the stakes, but it still doesn’t exactly feel like Mortal Kombat, ya know? No? That’s ok, just rambling.
Mortal Kombat 3 on the SNES was a solid follow-up to MK2, although some of the changes were controversial. The new run mechanic offered faster gameplay, combos got crazier, and the roster included some cool additions like Kabal and Cyrax. Sadly, several classic characters were missing, and the graphics, while improved, didn't have the same gritty charm as MK2. Overall, a fun fighter but with some missteps.
This game is like one step forward and one step backward.
The gameplay is clearly better, with sprinting, attack chains and arena transitions. The presentation is probably the best in the series, as on top of the martial arts and surrealism of the previous entries it adds apocalyptic and urban imagery. Also probably best music in the series.
But I think there are fewer environments, which makes the game feel repetitive. And the difficulty is arguably even worse than the previous game due to the smaller amount of credits. The character roster, which everybody seems to hate, isn't that bad imo, but it definitely feels smaller than it should. Don't get why they had to throw away basically already thought-through and tested characters, when most of the gameplay is basically the same.
And of course the Ultimate edition later made the original version obsolete.

Good, and less clunky than 2, but just falls short of being much better, still same issue with bosses and fights of reactionary AI that seems to read your inputs as you press them, making the game more difficult than it actually needs to be and not a whole lot of actual playing due to it.
Probably excels more when it comes to multiplayer though
Main - Sektor
