This was not the first time i was killed by an oversight, in stage 3 i got to a part where the game freezes and wants you to activate the time rewind, but i got to that part without MP so i couldn't activate it and since the game was frozen i couldn't get my MP back either so i decided to press reset, and then the reset BROKE the cutscene that played before the freeze and i had to close the game and do the whole section again.
That aside the game is okay, it's not very pretty, the gamplay is decent, the music is not bad, but the story is awful, a bunch of things that happen can be easily stopped with time manipulation wich is the main mechanic of the game but the MC just goes "oh no" and let's thing happen.
If it was a bit more polished it could be worth it, i see it being a decent game to play on your 3DS, but on PC with so many better options? Nah.
The levels are short and have great pacing making it fun to retry every time you die and once you dominated a level you can reach the boss in less than a minute and it feels awesome.
The enemy placement is an aspect that i always heard bad things about, but to be honest it's really good most of the time, even when i thought i found one of those unfair placements i usually found a way to beat them consistently after a few attempts, and finding how to get past those enemies was part of what made replaying the levels fun for me.
Every stage in the game is great and fun to play, unfortunately the bosses suck ass. Boss 1 and 2 are braindead easy, boss 3 is kinda cool, boss 4 is decent, boss 5 is like the first two but hits harder, and the final boss is long and tedious.
It's not an issue for most of them because you just beat them and move on, but the final boss sending you back to 6-1 is bullshit. The bosses sending you back to the start of an area instead of the previous screen even if you had continues is questionable, but not a big deal. The final boss sending you back to the beginning of the chapter fucking sucks. I ended up doing the whole chapter like 10 times and i memorized it to the point of reaching 6-3 again in like a minute but in the end i gave up and put a save state before the boss. Oh, and the game doesn't refill your HP for the rematches because fuck you.
Apparently it's a bug, so i don't feel TOO guilty for using a save state but it still sucks because i don't like using them and i really wanted to beat the game without them. That bug completly ruined the flow and fun i was having, if i was sent back to 6-3 instead i wouldn't have any complaints aside from the boss being tedious.
The game has a few more issues aside form that, the way enemies respawn is fucking stupid but surpisingly it's not an issue most of the time. There are some bullshit moments caused by it but for the most part taking your time killing the enemies before progressing and causing too many enemies to spawn works great.
Once you fuck up it feels hard to recover sometimes because the enemies move like crazy around you and they become really hard to hit, if there's too many enemies you'll be juggled like it's tekken and getting hit near a wall is annoying because Ryu will stick to it and fuck up whatever input you were trying to do.
Like in many NES games, 99% of your deaths will be caused by the classic knockback > pit combo, in fact you'll probably notice that most enemies deal pitiful damage except for the birds for some reason making it hard to die "normally".
The presentation is really well done, the story may be simple but the cutscenes are neat and look good, the game looks great and i rarely had issues with the clarity (i only died a few times to bats i didn't see because of the background), and the soundtrack has some cool tunes.
Tl;dr: Loved the experience from the title screen to the very end of 6-3, got the flow completly destroyed by the shitty final boss sending me back to 6-1 after each death.
I feel like i could start a new game and reach 6-3 in like 15-20 minutes, maybe i'll rematch the final boss and beat it without the save state if i get the itch to play it again.
I played it on insane mode because the game slowing down before each obstacle sounds annoying. I didn't bother with the bonus stages because every time you fail you get kicked back to the title screen and it takes a while before being able to select them again.
