in the past

The first 3D mainline game. While flawed, it's still pretty decent. It also introduced Mega Evolution, a mechanic they never topped afterwards.

Upon reaching the 3DS era of Pokemon, I feel like I am close to reaching the end goal of the past generation Pokemon games that I haven't played at all, and I have been enjoying the ride through this franchise. But now as I entered the first half of gen 6, my thoughts on X and Y are mixed.

This game back then was when I was in the phase of not caring about Pokemon at all in high school, zoomer moment. But I did admit that the jump to 3D looked amazing for a handheld back then, which the models in future games are reused from X and Y.

In terms of what I thought the game really excelled with, was the Pokemon designs as I think these look really nice to me, even if I think other generations have better designs. Yeah sure, you have some stinkers like Klefki, Barbaracle, and Diggersby, but most of the new mons are unique and incredible to look at like Aegislash, Malamar, Dragalge, and Goodra whom I used later on in the team as it's my favourite dragon type in the franchise. And speaking of which, we got a brand new type added in this game being the Fairy type which would become another mainstay. It seems to be that when Pokemon adds a new type, they end up being overpowered, and that's what the Fairy type is in this game...and the next...and the next...and the next. A lot of old Pokemon were converted to pure fairy type or half fairy like Jigglypuff, Whimsicott, Clefairy, Gardevoir, but most of the new mons are also fairy type, with the mascot being a brand new Eeveelution, Sylveon. Just a shame that there are only 72 new mons this time, the lowest any game has gone being a max total of 721 mons at that time.

What I didn't expect from this game, was that the region of Kalos had some underrated music in several areas like the battles against the gym leaders, Team Flare, champion, and the legendaries, Victory Road, Lumiose City, Snowbelle City, and even Santalune City. Plus, the region itself having a huge design basis from France was stunning with what the designs of each area and town looked like, with Lumiose City being the biggest area in the game; having 3 sections you can head through plus a gym you fight at later on. This area is mainly the hub of Kalos and has a lot of areas and shops interconnected with it, with routes divulging in every direction. Cannot wait to explore this in Legends Z-A coming out.

Now the negatives...I really did not find the story to be engaging. Now the story formula is the same as usual, you get the picture already, but now they make you have 4 friends that journey with you. You got your neighbouring rival Serena or Calem, Shauna, the dex fanatic Trevor and the worst character Tierno. The story really wants you to like these characters but they come across as boring and annoying especially with the last two. Team Flare felt like a weak villain organisation, wanting to rule the world after firing a weapon some king made 3000 years and be the only ones left to live...yeah great plan. And do not get me started on the post game, holy hell this is so lame. You have a 2 hour long mission with Looker in Lumiose, and you can get the new mega stones, plus 2 returning legendaries and that's it. SO WEAK!!!

One new thing added in this generation was the birth of the 'gimmicks' seen nowadays in Pokemon, with the first one being Mega Evolutions. Megas are essentially new forms specific Pokemon can take in battle that grant them a huge boost in their stats and sometimes can even change their typing like Mega Gyarados for instance. While these were really cool, these immediately made the game a cakewalk since your attack stats would go stupidly high with these. And that brings me to my next point...this game was very easy to overlevel in.
They changed the exp share feature from being a held item into a key item this time, like in modern games, but they made this incredibly busted as you can easily go over levelled if not careful. You can turn it off and be like classic Pokemon, but I didn't and wanted to switch Pokemon if I felt too high levelled.

Overall, X and Y are not bad, but they aren't good either. While I thoroughly enjoyed exploring Kalos and loved seeing the pretty areas of the game, the low amount of new Pokemon was rather disappointing for me, the story was extremely dull and lame, and the exp share made the game way too easy at times. But the megas were a really cool addition, and I'm honestly surprised to see them return again. Here's hoping they nerf them then. X and Y are pretty low in terms of wanting to play them again, but they are fun if you just don't focus on the story and want a shorter Pokemon game on the side.

The fairy type and its irreversible consequences.

Much more of a fun nostalgia trip right before the servers go down rather than me really enjoying the game. I remember loving this game as a kid, a big reason was just because of all the random ass mysteries and secrets here, I think the ghost girl alone was the source of me watching about 50 pokemon xy secrets videos in a row back then. I never get excited for new pokemon games nowadays, but I hope Legends Z-A is a good game purely because of how much 12 year old me would be freaking out that pokemon Z is a real video game.

Pokémon X was painfully easy until Lysandre who I gave one half hearted attempt before dropping the game. I did not care about the stories or the characters at all, this is the worst mainline Pokémon game in my opinion.

We remember incredibly little about this game, but Sycamore makes me feel things so four stars for that alone. 🥖

Very good Pokemon game, would like if they expanded more on the mega evolution gimmick through the story mode tho.

the first pokemon game i completed. the story is decent and it has a special place in my heart! at the end of the day its your average pokemon game. it deserves a 3 but nostalgia boosts it up a bit for me.

Okay listen
It's definitely not the best Pokemon game out there and the difficulty was so abysmal I could make it through a majority of the game by 1-Hit-K.O.'ing most of my opponents
BUT
I played this during a dark time in my life and it was a huge comfort to me back then so it'll always have a special place in my heart

I enjoyed this when I was younger and have restarted now to re-experience the game, in particular now taking the chance to play as the girl character

Worlds biggest X/Y apologist (it was my first pokemon game and mega evolution was cool)

Whilst this game was definitely on the easier side compared to some other Pokemon games, it does hold a special place in my heart. The plot was simple yet endearing, and the characters- whilst forgettable for some- all brought their own unique charm to the game as a whole. The choice to give the player a group of friends to travel with was interesting, and the dynamic that each of the friends had with the protag was gave the game a little extra sense of personality, and made the game feel more 'realistic' in a way. Mega Evolutions are, to this day, one of my favourite gimmicks that have been brought to the table, and the designs of most of the individual evolutions are mostly stellar (with some exceptions. Looking at you, mega Manectric.) Also, the music was always pleasant, providing a wonderful experience to the ears throughout the whole game.

The Kalos region was a fun new area to explore, with the character customisation options available via the clothing stores and boutiques adding a nice element of customisation that had not previously been seen in the games prior to it. Lumiose city, whilst difficult to navigate if you're not a genius with directions (I know I'm not), was a fun place to explore, with the amount of different shops and services being available to provide plenty of entertainment for post-game. The Cafes are a great way to level up lower level Pokemon (although, the hald-holdy nature of the EXP share doesnt deem this completely necessary until post-game, unless you find a last minute addition to your team). In general, it was a fun new region, and I'm looking forward to being able to explore it further in the upcoming game.

Team Flare and Lysandre was certainly entertaining in my opinion, however I do feel as though their motives were somewhat vague and weren't explored as much as they could've been. Considering Lysandre's main objective was essentially mass murder, I feel as though his character could've been built up on slightly more to make him seem more 'villainous'. The final fight between Lysandre and the protag was somewhat underwhelming and overly easy for a boss battle, however this may not be a dealbreaker if you're looking for a more relaxing time.

Everything about AZ was extremely interesting, however it was disappointing how unfinished he seemed as a character. He seemed to have such an interesting story that would've provided a great deal to the plot, however he was used as little more than a side character. The ending with his Floette returning always brought a tear to my eye, however everything regarding the before (the war and the 3000 years after) and after (the infinite years after his Pokemon returned to him) were just left completely untouched. One battle and 3 or 4 scenes of dialogue just seems not enough for a character with such potential, and I do hope they build upon him slightly more when the new Legends came comes out next year.

Finally, the online services... Ripperoni. But, for the time they were available, the gen 6 online communication features were easily one of - if not THE best in the series. Wonder trading, O-powers, just everything about it was so clean cut and made the experience that much more fun. Seeing all the icons on your bottom screen of people you had either communicated with or passed by was honestly just pleasant, and added a little bit of extra charm to the game. Pokemon Amie was a fun time, as being able to see other peoples Pokemon running across your screen and leaving gifts was a nice touch, and was all in all a fun game mechanic. The same goes for Super training (although this isn't an online feature, but oh well); fun minigames, easier EV training, and an easier way to get evolution stones? Sign me up.

In general, the game still holds up well for its time. Whilst the plot could have been bulked up more, it was still a wonderful game that provided a lot of amazing mechanics that many people still love and appreciate to this day. It certainly had letdowns in some areas, however the sense of community and the general enjoyable mechanics made is a worthy edition to the Pokemon franchise.

Easily the worst of the mainline pokemon games. Ruined rivals, gift pokemon made this waaay too easy, things were unexplained for the sake of being unexplained, Zygarde kinda fell off, Mega evolution not as cool as many remember, and very bland Poke league and missed opportunities. Also worst evil team.

Okay look this game does kinda suck, but I do enjoy some things! It is way too easy, even if you switch out your Pokémon often. The gym leaders are meh and the evil team is...Lysandre. I don't really love Kalos, but it was a decent first step into 3D. Still funny Charizard got two megas and they couldn't come up with one design for Flygon.

This is a pretty standard Pokemon game to me. I do think Mega evolutions has been the best gimmick they've put in the game since Gen 6 has come out. The gyms are all pretty easy, but the story is somewhat engaging so I think its pretty bog standard for a Pokemon game

Absolutely loved this game when it came out. Playing it today, I still mostly like it! Lots of funny little guys to catch (Espurr my beloved, Megas are cool, some really great music and playing a mainline 3D game for the first time was awesome.
Definitely not without its flaws. Pretty mediocre story, some annoying side characters, really easy difficulty, and parts of the world feeling unfinished. Gets kinda boring towards the end, but I'm nostalgic enough to look past most of the negatives.

Very good. Kalos is my favorite region of the series. Of course there are some stuff missing, but now that we know that sequels were scrapped, I can't be angry about that. Very solid games overall and thank you for bringing my favorite type!
