You'd think that a remake of a fighting game wouldn't be so different, yet Real Bout Fatal Fury Special some how just decided to come out and make proper changes to it's mechanics while also adding in a bunch of extra stuff that really enhances the experience. Honestly, I'm kinda psyched up to say this is my favorite SNK fighter so far, and perhaps one of my favorite fighting games.
So, what makes the special in this game? I'd say just the polish it adds on to it. From different difficulty choices in arcade mode, the transitioning between each stage, the new 2 line system that helps simplify the game mechanics, to the shortened down arcade mode, and just the better animation over all. I legit think this is the most improvement I've seen in a fighting game since Street Fighter 4 to Super Street Fighter 4. I really liked the original Real Bout Fatal Fury game, but special makes the choice very obvious which one you should go with. The game is just far more alive, and feels faster due to all the improvements it got from making some minor adjustments.
Real Bout Special really is everything you loved about the original game, but packaged better. I still don't see this as very tournament friendly, but gosh would this make for a wonderful afternoon with friends. I know I said it before, but it bares repeating that Real Bout Fatal Fury just kinda rocks with all it's new innovations of 2D fighting mechanics, and it's ability to add more flare to each stage. Special just gives you a more balanced breakfast of goodies.
