alright so one day I was having a brilliant time playing Bulk Slash on my Sega Saturn. I was quite far in the game. Then, my baby cousin came over. I was thinking, aw man he's a curious mind that probably wants something to do. I'll turn off Bulk Slash and put on something fun for a boy his age. I put on Sonic R. He hated it. Since he's the boss, I'm going to have to knock this down a peg.

The soundtrack’s back is strong caring this entire game

the music is absolutely phenomenal. too bad that the game itself doesn't hold up to the standard that is set by the soundtrack...

Honestly there might be something cooking here, want to get back to this one.

(In the tune of Can You Feel the Sunshine)

♫ Can you see?
This game is really shitty.
It gives me a migraine,
so shitty!
It makes me wanna die.
The graphics
they look so unfinished
It’s like Bubsy 3D,
but it’s worse,
It began the 3D Sonic curse!

Can you feel they half-assed?
This garbage Sonic racing game
One would think it would be hard
To fuck up to this degree
Considering that Sonic
Is built just for speed
This could’ve been a great game
But they swindled the budget!

Feel the garbage

The controls,
there are so many holes
They botched this aspect too!
The characters move,
Like slipping through puddles
Don’t know why
They all insist to slide
Extinguishing my pride,
in Sonic
It’s only getting worse from here!

Can you feel they half-assed?
This garbage Sonic racing game
One would think it would be hard
To fuck up to this degree
That Tails Doll creepypasta
Cannot save this game
Neither that nor this song
Cause it’s so goddamn corny!

When Sonic gets stuck
I feel so damn frustrated
Wish I could back up
Instead of turning like a slug

Can you feel it?
Ooh-hoo…
Can you feel it?
Oh…

Lack of effort?
Oh…
Lack of effort!

Whoa-oh-oh-oh
Piss you off, it may
Never play this game…
Pissed off, you’ll be pissed off
An embarrassment
I say fuck this game! ♫

This game has always been a guilty pleasure of mine. I don't have any excuses; the game's vibe is just unmatched for me personally. It's pretty replayable too with tons of shortcuts to find.

Just go in with an open mind.

Sonic R is a demonstration of exactly how far a vibe can carry a game. Like, as a kart racer it's horrifically imbalanced and there's barely any content at all, but despite that, I think you have to kinda' love it.

The all-vocal soundtrack is arguably the best of its kind, and the low-poly 3D models are even more stylish now than they were at the time. And bizarrely, there's not any other arcade racing game, Sonic or otherwise (as far as I know), where you run on foot? It is completely wild that this exists in the fashion that it does and the world is better for it.

i once listened to the sonic r soundtrack to try to rescue myself from a delirious episode. sonic r visually stuns. sonic r is funny and cute. i now see sonic r in many games i play. i am deadly serious. sonic r rocks.

i wish it was more like a pirate game cos then it could be sonic arrr and i think that would be awesome

Sonic R is an on foot racing game released in 1997 for the SEGA Saturn and rereleased for the GameCube on the Sonic Gems Collection.

while a fun little game for what it is I feel like it suffers from two major issues, the controls feel very weird, like when your racing I feel there's a delay between moving around, granted it's only about a second but its still pretty annoying, and the turning feels fucking awful, like if your trying to get a Chaos Emerald and your unfortunate enough to miss it you have to turn yourself to the proper position to get it, it can take a good 3-5 seconds to try and do and get going to the finish line.

controls aside my second issue is the lack of content, granted it was a racing game released in 1997 so I can't really complain considering the time period but it still felt very short, with only 5 tracks (the final one unlocking after you clear the other 4 stages), but I will admit it does have a good amount of characters to choose from, that being 9.

but I will say if you can get used to the controls I'd say what is here can be a very fun time, even if the game itself only lasts for about 2-3 hours at most, and even though the music gets made fun of I like it quite a lot, my favorite Tracks being "Diamonds In The Sky", "Back In Time", and "Living In The City".

the game itself also has two other modes like Time Attack, and a 1 VS 2 Player Mode, but I doubt you'll find anyone willing to play this with you, the modes are in my opinion quite shallow, while Time Attack is a fun little distraction I doubt it will with keep you around.

but with all of my complaints (aside from also being the corner stone of shitty internet horror stories) aside Sonic R was a fun time for me, but it wasn't good enough for me to rate in any higher than a 3.5/5 stars, I'd say half and half is fair, if you play this game be very cautious cause Sonic Gems can fetch high prices now adays, but yeah with that being said Sonic R is in my eyes just a fun little distraction, nothing more nothing less,

I think this is the wall I hit after marathoning every classic sonic game, it's genuinely frustrating to get through the first race.
Maybe I'll come back to it some other time.

This game is overhatted severely. People play it for 2 minutes and turn it off. The stages are big and prone to exploration while racing which is great. The OST is amazing and metal knuckles is a Goated character. I think this game is very fun but there is very little content included.

Can a soundtrack carried a game?Well.....

One of the worst racing games ever but the soundtrack is banging.

One of the greatest EPs ever dropped and I guess there's a racing game you can play that comes with it

Um jogo estranho.... divertido! Mas estranho, ah! A ost desse jogo é boa.

For how memed-on this particular game has been for the last 20 years in the long list of Sonic games that the Internet has decided is deserving of such treatment, I was anticipating something much worse when I first jumped in. What I especially wasn't expecting was falling in love with this game.

There's somewhat of an unexplained learning curve regarding some of the control oddities (which in all fairness may have been alleviated with the inclusion of a manual as was originally intended), but once it clicks, Sonic R handles significantly better than Mario Kart 64 in my honest opinion. The incorporation of other classic Sonic elements like rings and jumping are a welcome addition to the kart racer formula, and they feel right at home in these lovingly-crafted spaces.

In spite of the short track list, this game is remarkably replayable. Revisiting areas with different characters and using their abilities to access new locations and try to work out where all the collectables are, all while trying to figure out how to do so in enough time to still win the races makes for some of the most manic fun I've ever felt in a racing game. I've never seen anything like it.

This one's always fun to bust out for an hour or two every few years and smoke a couple of laps to some of the catchiest gaming tunes of 1997. To this day, Sonic R still feels like a really fresh take on kart-racing, significantly more so than what the series offers nowadays in Sonic & Sega All-Stars/Team Sonic Racing.

This would be a five-star rating but I'm docking half a star because I consumed way too much Tails Doll creepypasta in my youth and it gave me untold nightmares.
