This is a weird case. I wouldn’t fault anyone for saying they didn’t like this DLC. Its rooms/floors can feel repetitive, the final boss is anticlimactic and, even if it does serve the narrative, the almost completely white color scheme can feel overbearing and downright boring after a while. I also have personal issues with it, namely I think there are just a few less floors than I would like, and there should maybe be an option for playing runs that last longer than 30 floors, maybe even 50. But even acknowledging all that, this DLC is such a cool concept and the gameplay itself is so well-designed and simply enjoyable, that those issues barely matter.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure this is the first roguelike Nintendo themselves have made. And it sticks the landing quite well! The feedback loop of upgrading your gear, losing and getting permanent upgrades is a familiar but powerful formula that hasn’t lost its efficacy in Nintendo’s hands. A big issue that people also thought the DLC would have is that it looked really easy in the trailers, but that was probably just because the developers chose to mostly highlight the Easy or Normal floors. There are also Hard and Rigorous floors, as well as bonus challenges that potentially net you doubled rewards, and Danger-modified floors, which have a forced secondary challenge.
While I otherwise feel like this system of choosing your difficulty based on the current situation is quite genius, I don’t think the Danger modifier is properly implemented. It’s introduced as something that you have to tackle at least a few times per run, unless you want every selectable floor to become a Danger floor, but that never happened to me even when I purposely avoided them. Not sure if I somehow outsmarted the game, but that risk-reward system never opened up to me.
However, outside of that one small hiccup, the DLC is really fascinating, and honestly might be my favorite over Octo Expansion. Although Octo Expansion was not a bad experience by any means and it still is the best Splatoon’s story mode has been in its traditional style, I somehow enjoyed Side Order much more, and can imagine myself enjoying it for upwards of 50 hours in the future.
That’s another interesting aspect; although I recognise Octo Expansion is probably the superior overall experience, with less obvious issues and more interesting level design, Side Order’s replayability, simple fun and sheer compatibility with what the Switch is supposed to stand for might make it my favorite Splatoon mode yet. It could well be the Prime 3 of the Splatoon series: very different from what came before, clearly trying something new by focusing on a style the franchise hasn’t generally tried up to that point (for Prime 3 it was a story-heavy cinematic shooter, departing from the earlier metroidvania-y feel, and for Side Order it’s making the DLC story mode a pretty extensively replayable roguelike), and ultimately it’s my favorite in the series despite the second game’s offerings probably being objectively better.
Maybe I’m easy to please. Or maybe it’s just good game design.

i'm not expecting an incredibly in-depth rogue like system for a splatoon game of all things so i enjoyed what they brought to the table for this one!
it does feel a bit lacking content-wise in comparison to splatoon 2's octo expansion, but octo expansion 2 is peak splatoon content so it's hard to beat in the first place. the serotonin i got from beating the DLC and getting the extra content though is unmatched

I inhale roguelikes. So I was a bit surprised at how easy this one was? I still only had two lives on the final boss. Wasn’t very upgraded, and beat the game on the run where I first reached floor 20. It’s good fun, new Pearlina content is inherently good to me, but it’s a case of just, don’t go in expecting an Octo Expansion. It’s just mildly underwhelming after a year of buildup? Idk. Definitely still good and there’s something there for the diehards but I beat it in maybe 3 hours?
'Marina is so hot' my eldest daughter insists on telling me. I do not fucking care. "I do not fucking care" I bellow to her. "Go downstairs and - sweet christ - flip burgers in my restaurant my self proclaimed child. for free"
"Oh father, hallowed be thy name, just for one mere Saturday morning may I-". I raise my eyebrow to such an extent that, as I had previously insisted, she walked downstairs to work in my restaurant. come to my restaurant after you finish this game please and that is not me talking to my daughter this time that is directed towards you

Side order is another proof that the Splatoon gameplay loop works better in more diversity than just PvP, it's a shame it's so short, most people beat it with their first 3 runs, and it's hard not to with the stupid amount of op perma upgrades they give you right away, but eventually its just to keep you engaged, you can set your own difficulty in very big drastic ways, and the gameplay loop is Splatoon pve, which is super engaging anyways
Its a really good dlc, though wish it got updates to add more content to it

I was a bit let down by this one. Playing it right after Balatro did it no favors. Whereas Balatro's off the wall power-ups made every run feel unique, in Side Order the mod chips are very basic and the levels are repeated so often that it gets quite repetitive. I never felt like I had an interesting choice in which level I would pick because I would either choose it based off the most currency when I'm getting permenant upgrades or based off the best mod chip when going for the winning run. There's some fun to be had here but not a ton.
very cool dlc to splatoon 3! making a splatoon roguelike was absolutely a step in the right direction, as the gameplay loop of this one is satisfying and features many interesting color chips and palettes to choose from. the only thing i didn't enjoy about this dlc was the lack of variety in objective types; even if they had added maybe 1 or 2 more types of objectives per floor, it would've made for a much more interesting system, imho.
Most fun splatoon gameplay imo, just reallyyyy wish there were more levels… way too short, and it gets less replayable once you’ve grinded out everything. Also wish there were more collectables; for example Cipher’s shop is pretty lacking and could use more items.
Also wish there were more lore to it? I was expecting a lot more in the lore department… Really liked the dev diaries though, and seeing dedf1sh’s character get expanded on was great (i’ve been their number 1 fan since day 1)

For a rouge lite, this was a joy to play! Having to fill up the palettes with color chips and coming up with weird ways to make your setup stronger was a thrill for me. I'm just....not good at it at all lol.
I think I only got up to the 20th or 22th floor myself, but i enjoyed what i was doing in it. I will definitely come back to it eventually, and maybe I'll have a training arc and git gud!!

It's not the sort of adventure I'd have liked, but really any excuse to spend more time with this gameplay is cool by me. I still reckon these mechanics would be perfect for a 3rd person Metroid.
Also (and this is not just limited to Side Order) it's very funny how much more interesting and fun Splatoon bosses are than anything I fought in a couple hundred hours of Elden Ring :)
