If Mel Brooks wrote a video game, this would be that video game.
I actively dislike this game. I didn't think it was funny, or fun to play back when it first came out, and it's only gotten worse since.

While that may have sounded cliché, this game has a great sense of humor that twists it all around: the bard (voiced by Cary Elwes from "The Princess Bride") is a sardonic sleaze who keeps making trouble and butting heads with everyone, including the narrator. Also, there are several musical numbers. The RPG part is completely streamlined: you do gain experience to level up and learn new skills, but there is no item management - when you pick up a better weapon or armor, the old one is replaced automatically, and anything else is converted into coin. Dialogues are also simplified, you only choose between nice or snarky. Combat is pretty nice: rather than a team, you use music to summon magical creatures to assist you.

Good game, a satire of the classic RPG hero story we heard A LOT.
It doesn't have the greatest gameplay mechanic of all time, but satisfied me. Average difficulty, nostalgic and great.

I just saw that the overall rating for this is on the lower side. I'm surprised as I thought it was a relatively well liked game but I guess not. I really ended up enjoying it as a funny jab at the action RPGs of the day and it introduced me to inXile Entertainment. I still chuckle at the stupid Beer Beer Beer song.
Low expectations can be a boon, sometimes. I came in expecting a low-rent PC port of an OG Xbox ARPG, and I got a game that was surprisingly quick on its feet, both in gameplay and writing. Sure, there's elements to both that haven't aged well, but in essence, Bard's Tale answers the question of "What if Mel Brooks made Robin Hood: Men in Tights but a video game? And also half-decent?" Some of the dungeons may have dragged a bit, but I was tickled by the game's often tweaking its design.

Clever writing, stupid jokes. Something about the silences in a lot of areas makes it feel like an unfinished Diablo cash in.
