A mix of olympic mini games that are mostly about timing and a lot of button mashing. Really nice visuals and animations along with good use of synth voices.

Arcade Week: Day #5

Remember a while back when I said that paperboy was the biggest ‘dad game’ I ever played? Well now I retract that statement. I bamboozled you all. The actual biggest ‘dad game’ of all time is track & field. Konami’s forgotten money-making masterpiece.

So what do you do in track & field? I’m glad you asked. You have 2 buttons, run and action which helps you in 1 of 6 competitions: 100 meter dash (you alternate button presses to run as fast as you can), long jump (you run by pressing the button and then press jump at the right moment), javelin throw (similar to long jump but you throw a javelin), 110 meter hurdles (run by pressing the button and jumping at the correct time), hammer throw (you spin and then press the correct button at the right time), and the high jump (you run and then hold down the action button). In each even you have to get a qualifying time or or level so that player can get to the next competition. If you fail you lose a life, if you don’t have any lives left, you probably ain’t gonna be seeing another Olympics until you put in a few more quarters.

Overall, track & field is actually a pretty fun game all things considered. It has some pretty decent competitions and I find it really fun to get one of your friends to help you spam buttons whilst you focus on another. Sure, you both might be left with hurting hands but I’m sure it’ll all be worth it in the end.

Good selection of events, funny announcer, dad game, hurt my hand

An absolute killer on your hands, but still a decent sports game.

Oh my god, I had completely forgotten about this until going down the list of NES games here. I loved this so much as a kid because we had the track pad where you literally had to run to play, which was amazing at the time, but also meant this game could never be relived through emulators ever again.

Now I'm sad to think I may never play it again.

A little sports game where the enemy is you and your own weakness. It's super short, just a collection of minigames.

Perfect simulation of the actual olympics, spend an unreasonable amount of time to get really good at something that provides no actual benefit in real life

i got cocky on this one. i've been humbled too much by hector fly, current wr holder

once i rubbed a bit of skin off my middle knuckle trying to cheese having to button mash. anyway i became a beast at this game cuz i played it so much until i ran into a cabinet with blown-up requirements

This game made me work out as a child just to beat Cheetah. Once I finally did, my friend used his hands and showed me how easy the game could be. I no longer trust anything.

Killed my fingers and my controller and still didn't get the gold...just one more jav

There are eight different sports that are played in a similar way (for the athletic sports - shooting and archery test other skills), i.e. with the mashing of the A button and the addition of a direction for contextual actions. If the difficulty curve is rather well balanced, one can regret a certain lack of variety. It should also be noted that single button mashing forces you to use double-tap or vibration strategies. In the arcade, it is easy to practice double- or multi-tap, since the buttons are particularly large. This is much less true for an NES controller, although it is much easier than on recent controllers. This difficulty on a console certainly foreshadows alternate mashing, which requires the use of A and B.

Another classic from Aunty Gema's NES. I also played this game at an arcade cabinet in a pintxos bar my parents used to frequent in the late 80s.

Definitely one of the first games I ever played and for sure the first ever sports game. Really fond memories. I recently replayed it at a retro arcade salon-pub and must say this game is still very playable and lots of fun.

i loved playing this game on the XBLA and i dont even know why

I'm just gonna log every tie I beat this game
