I don't even consider myself a Devil May Cry fan and this game was kinda disappointing. There's good action for you to appreciate, but there's a lot less charm than Devil May Cry 3, and a lot less innovation compared to Devil May Cry. Having to repeat the game in reverse at the middle is a particularly sad way to wrap up the game, even if you get to play as a style-switching Dante again. It feels very unfinished, and it left fans feeling the series in general was unfinished until the DMC5 announcement finally came. I don't want to make this game sound terrible or anything, because it isn't, but I will also say I'm glad the mainline series didn't end like this.
The next installment of the Devil May Cry series brings our new main character Nero, with an all new set of moves and mechanics. Combat is the crazy action-packed fare you've come to expect from the series, but this game does come with one fatal flaw; which issi hcihw ;walf lataf eno htiw emoc seod emag siht tub ,seires eht morf tcepxe ot emoc ev'uoy eraf dekcap-noitca yzarc eht si tabmoC .scinahcem dna sevom fo tes wen lla na htiw ,oreN retcarahc niam wen ruo sgnirb seires yrC yaM liveD eht fo tnemllatsni txen ehT

For a massive chunk of this game it's fun, the combats good, the level design is serviceable.... and then you hit the forest section and it totally falls apart. The levels become a confusing mess that cause you to backtrack ridiculous amounts; showing you key information that isn't relevant for nearly 20 minutes under the assumption that you actually know where you're supposed to be going only to HIT YOU WITH THE ENTIRE GAME AGAIN IN REVERSE AS DANTE, WHO THIS GAME IS VERY CLEARLY NOT MEANT TO BE PLAYED AROUND. I really want to love this game, I REALLY DO. But Holy Shit does it do everything in it's power to frustrate me and make me wish I was playing either 3 or 5. This game had the potential to be a perfect sequel to 3, but instead it falls wholly flat on its face in the second half and fails to keep me excited and having fun. I do still recommend the game as it's not an egregious experience, but it's incredibly messy and frustrating. I would probably skip this title and play 5 instead, only play if you want the full DMC experience.
I've seen way too many people give this game a pass because of the development, but unfortunately I am not one of those people. This game is one of the laziest hastily thrown together games I have ever played. Combat is kinda fun but it doesn't excuse some of the worst enemy and level design the series or the genre as a whole has to offer. Nothing is really fun to fight unless it's the basic grunt enemies, bosses just kinda sit around and let you wail on them unless it's credo which is the only good boss, the rest is flaming garbage, and when it isn't wasting your time with the bad enemies, it's wasting your time with the horrid level gimmicks and recycled content. You have the terrible platforming and god awful spinning tops and dice game in the castle, boring as shit laser sections later on in the game, and when there isn't a bad gimmick the levels are DMC2 levels of empty and full of nothing, not to mention that you need to not only backtrack through these awful levels in reverse as Dante, but you also fight the same bland bosses 3 TIMES. The blatant padding and filler is rampant throughout this game and it never gets any better from there.
I thought I would potentially like this more if I took the time to master Dante's arsenal and guard fly everywhere but that didn't do a single thing to further my enjoyment on this game. If anything it only reinforced how much of a chore fighting these enemies are. The other playable characters aren't fun to mess around with either. Only worth playing through if you're wanting to do bloody palace and basically nothing else. Next
