Great remake of a fantastic game.

Great remake of a classic game.

Melhor Mario&Luigi RPG, disparado

So I don't really have any GBA games. The only one I have is Final Fantasy V Advance, but needless to say, I've never played the original Superstar Saga, so I'm reviewing this as the game itself, and not a remake. From what I've heard, it's extremely faithful, and that's what I'll leave it at.

The game's story centers around a witch from the Beanbean Kingdom, named Cackletta, stealing Princess Peach's voice and replacing it with some, quite literally, explosive commentary. Bowser, who had attempted yet again to kidnap her, decided the princess' new lexicon would wreak havoc on his castle, so he takes Mario, and a reluctant Luigi, along to the Beanbean Kingdom to set things straight. Meanwhile, all the plot-pertinent shenanigans ensue.

The story is silly and doesn't take itself seriously, which is to be expected for this series. Nonetheless, this game is bonkers, and at least to me, some of the antics you engage in are more compelling than the main story itself. Heck, every location save for 4 is named after a synonym for laughing. If you were expecting a tale of melodrama, deep character arcs, and intrigue, by all means look elsewhere. This game doesn't offer that at all.

Speaking of locations, the Beanbean kingdom is a cool place that is largely different from the typical Mushroom KIngdom fare. In hindsight, I feel that it's a bit small, with very little to do outside of a few minigames, and 1-2 sidequests that are worth doing. However, an effort was made and I respect that.

This is a really solid RPG, but the one reason I can't rate it any higher is because of the combat. It's not bad. It's actually really good. I just don't like it. Introduced in Super Mario RPG on the SNES was hitting buttons at the correct time while attacking and getting hit to increase damage dealt and reduce damage taken respectively. It was snappy and fun. Paper Mario did a similar system, and it was also good. Mario and Luigi does it too and improves upon it by being able to possible negate damage and counterattack, and while it's good, I just don't care for it. Attacks that you do aren't so bad, but enemy attacks take a short while to get through at times. Not all attacks are slow, but the ones that are really annoyed me. I want quick, snappy combat that doesn't waste my time. However, in this game it's kinetic, but slow, and it irritates me.

That being said, the game's still great. The combat is far from terrible, it's just not my cup of tea. The story is silly. And on top of that, the game is pretty short. I actually left my 3DS on and open for two days or so, so I don't know how quickly I beat it, but it's definitely not the 73 hours my save says. I'd estimate 20 at max, and that's generous. I recommend picking it up.

Also, for Bowser's Minions, I heard it's terrible, so I didn't really bother with it.

8/10 - It's a great game, hindered by some personal preferences.

SPOILERS FOR THE FINAL BOSS: Cackletta's Soul that bad. The 1 HP thing is only a problem if you don't have a max nut or a speed of 90+. Plus, in this version, you can retry from there without having to redo the Bowletta fight

Didn't play the original, but this was really good and fun. Just like the rest of the series, (minus Paper Jam) filled to the brim with creativity.

A remake that's actually needed unlike BIS, definitely the best way to play this game

- Graphics are nice, despite removing some personality (and also they're the same graphics from the other dozen M&L 3DS games).

- Joke's End music is better.

- Minimap on the bottom screen is a nice touch.

- The new field controls tried to make things less confusing for new players by making A always Mario and B always Luigi and in the process made them a thousand times more clunky. There's an elegant logic to the original field controls that take a little getting used to; in here you just keep mashing R to go through the ten different combinations (or use the touch screen, but then you can't see the map), and it doesn't even implement any of the streamlining (if A is always Mario and B is always Luigi, why do High Jump and Spin Jump have to be separate things? They could both be on the same one and you just press A or B; same for hand powers and back-bro hammer powers, especially since X always makes both of them do a normal jump) or quality-of-life features (being able to choose how many gulps of water to swallow and seeing remaining spit ammo on the HUD) that Partners in Time added over a decade earlier.

- Harder to overlook the casual transphobia coming back to the game 18 years later. The Beanstar, which can only be awoken by a voice of pure beauty, reacts violently when it hears the voice of Birdo -- and the reveal that underneath that dress was actually a Birdo (incidentally, the question of whether she consented to this plan to permanently lose her voice is not addressed at all; she's not really treated as a sentient being in this scene despite another Birdo having full lines of dialogue a few hours later) is immediately followed by her chasing a horrified Toad offscreen trying to kiss them. Then later another Birdo shows up (presumably not the same character? since this one still has her voice? but that could just be this game not bothering to make sense), and once again the joke is that the male character she's with (who hesitates before calling her a woman and arguably deadnames her) is uncomfortable with her romantic advances, at least publicly, and she refuses to back off. Queen Bean refers to Bowletta as "he... she... uh, IT!" The Luigi scene isn't that bad but the part where Cackletta and Fawful see Luigi's mustache and it's just a big joke can definitely be a bit uncomfortable. Most of this could have been fixed for the remake -- the Birdo whose voice was stolen could have been replaced with a Goomba or a Beanie (simultaneously avoiding questions of "wait why is this Birdo talking now? is this a different Birdo?") and some dialogue could have been altered a bit. They changed the Donkey Kong skeleton to a regular skeleton, changed Kamek to Dr. Toadley, and changed a line of Bowser's dialogue to remove a British slur, so they could have turned down the transphobia a bit if they wanted to but instead a localization team of twelve people in 2017 looked at this and said "yeah, this is all still fine."

- You can save after the final boss now, but not actually. The game state is still where it was before the final battle, with the castle town still permanently under attack. What's the point of that?

- Haven't played Bowser's Minions / Minion Quest yet; not sure if i will.

- Still a pretty good game overall, but this version doesn't do much to justify its existence, with any changes being a roughly equal mix of slightly better, slightly worse, and neutral (and some things that should have been changed being left alone).

The game just has such a fun story and so many great characters. The gameplay is also a lot more engaging than most RPG games out there.

Precise timing in games is really not my strong suit, and the combat in this game puts a HUGE emphasis on timing, so it's honestly kind of a surprise that I still mostly enjoyed myself. (I gave up on Bros Attacks maybe six hours in, and got by surprisingly well without them until I ended up utterly outclassed in the final Cackletta fight.)

I liked the abilities and the game's creativity in pushing you to make regular use of them all, although it could get tedious at times - when I was exploring I enjoyed figuring out how to traverse a section, but when I was just trying to move quickly across a couple of screens to get to my destination it could be a pain to have to switch between abilities. They also got unwieldy once I'd unlocked them all, since I tended to keep the minimap open rather than using the Moves screen.

Overall it was a fun time with a lot of little touches that I loved (the Dr. Mario viruses in the Hooniversity were a particular standout). I'm pretty sure I originally got this game because someone somewhere made a Super Mario RPG comparison, and the game absolutely has that vibe even if it doesn't reach the same heights.

Bowser's Minions was fine for what it was, an optional add-in. I played through maybe a section and a half just to try it out, but I didn't feel a need to go any further.

8.5/10

It's Superstar Saga and a mode no one played, nothing more nothing less. Pretty disappointing there are no new additions, not even a boss rush.

just the original but ugly and with shittier music

Never got around to finishing the original, so this was a great opportunity to check out the game! The updated art style still has the same charm as the original sprites, and I really liked the blend of platforming and RPG elements. I wasn’t a fan of the Bowser’s Minions side story gameplay so I kinda gave up on that

The combat is actually pretty fun for an rpg and the writing is great but it's bogged down by gimmicks that bored me to tears. Why do so many rpgs make you play boring gimmick """platform""" sections that require no skill and give you absolutely no satisfaction. This game is also a bit of a clunker honestly.

This game was so much fun, glad it gave me a chance to try out the 1 Mario and Luigi game that I missed

Fantastic remake of a classic game in the series! Though I don't think its as perfectly paced or well rounded as Inside Story, its a dream to play regardless.

Not a bad remake. Reuses a lot of assets from Paper Jam, but still feels nice to have a remake of Superstar Saga with the modern Mario & Luigi playstyle. Bowser's Minions is a nice addition as well, but nothing too special. Not complaining since its packaged with the game though. Would recommend playing this version if the minor appearance changes don't bother you.

I don't think the original needed a remake. The rimixed music was not as good imo, but the added QOL features were nice.

Reviewing this version because it is superior

Pros:
•gameplay is fun as expected for m&L RPGS
•exploration is fun
•story is great
•new side mode is just alright and pretty neat.

Cons:
•some parts of the game are tedious and boring

One of the best parts of having now rekindled my love of video games is on top of all the new games I’ll be trying out for the first time, I also have a good excuse to replay a bunch of older titles I feel like revisiting. In this case it’s a bit of both, as I’m also playing through this (and Partners in Time) to prep for when I finally play Bowser’s Inside Story later in the year.

Now then, how about I actually talk about the game now. As is almost standard with most pre-Sticker Star Mario RPGs, AlphaDream forgoes using Bowser in favour of their own original villains. In this case we have the evil witch Cackletta and her henchman Fawful, both of which are endlessly entertaining throughout all the interactions with them. Along with them, as well as side villain Popple who’s also great, is a menagerie of other fun characters, from big players like Prince Peasley to more minor ones like Hermie. Of course just because he’s not the big bad doesn’t mean Bowser isn’t along for the ride as well, and it’s honestly quite funny how the game near endlessly craps on him.

Perhaps the biggest stand-outs for me are, well Mario and Luigi. Despite speaking in almost entirely gibberish for most of the game their personality shines stronger than ever, and many funny and endearing moments between the 2 are scattered throughout the adventure. Also with the Bros exploring totally new terrain via the Beanbean Kingdom, the game gets a chance to craft out a distinct mould for itself whilst still playing on the classic level tropes. (grassy fields, scorching deserts etc) The overworld maps also integrate platforming and puzzle challenges frequently, so it doesn’t feel like you’re just slugging around from place to place randomly encountering enemies occasionally.

Now for what is in my eyes the stand out feature of this series, the combat system. While not quite as ridiculous as they got in later entries, the Bros Attacks in this game are still quite engaging and fun to pull off, and the fact you can actually dodge enemy attacks unlike most RPGs (to my knowledge) is also a welcome feature.

Seeing as how this is a remake I might as well highlight the few things that are vastly improved upon compared to the original. While not terrible graphically a lot of designs in the GBA version do feel rather dated, particularly when it comes to Bowser who looks really squat when put against other characters. The addition of the touch screen also allows for a quicker way of accessing specific Bros Moves on the overworld as opposed to just cycling through most or all of them just to find one thing. Perhaps my favourite change is the omission of the massive difficulty spike during the final boss. (if you know, you know)

My only major problem (besides the new Minion Quest mode introduced in this version being ass) is that you‘ll end up having to backtrack a good bit, namely in the 3rd quarter for what’s basically an over glorified fetch quest. It’s not a massive deal-breaker or anything, but it’s just kinda repetitive and dull, especially when it’s immediately followed by Joke’s End, otherwise known as the area so infamous that I’m not even gonna talk about it. Pretty much everyone who’s played Superstar Saga can’t stand it, and rightfully so.

Overall even despite that it’s still a fantastic game, and easily the definitive way to play Superstar Saga. If you haven’t played it yet, I’d highly recommend either seeking out a copy or buying it off the eShop before it closes. I’ll see you all back here when I cover Partners in Time, cheers!

GBA version: 8/10
3DS version: 9/10

I've only played this game once, so my thoughts on it aren't super refined, but having played this game last of the Mario & Luigi games, it's surprisingly good for a first outing. The game somehow manages to avoid the dreaded first game syndrome in a lot of ways (that aren't because of the remake, I'm pretty sure) and the Beanbean Kingdom is a nice locale that I kinda wish we'd see more of, but also appreciate them not overusing. The soundtrack's unfortunately not as good here as in the original Superstar Saga, but I think most of the remixed tracks are at least acceptable. (They completely butchered the final boss theme, though.) Bowser's Minions is pretty awful as a side-mode, but I'm willing to judge the game more for its main adventure than for the mode that was evidently such an afterthought that they just slapped it onto the end of the title.

I played Partners in time and Bowser's Inside Story as a kid and I thought this game would bring me more nostalgia, but I think it didn't because it lacks all the charm of the original game, I really missed old sprites.
However, I enjoyed it, it was a nice game to chill after playing some hardcore JRPGs and not think much of stuff like grinding and instead just explore and search for beans.
I also didn't play the Bowser's Minion mode because it didn't sound very interesting honestly, which is a bit sad.

A really solid RPG in the Mario universe with one of my favorite sets of RPG battle mechanics to date. Also has some fantastic witty writing and fun original characters. The visuals are colorful, crisp, and look great on the handheld's screen, and the soundtrack is memorable and well-composed. Check it out.
