Combining my two favorite Sonic games into one full campaign, this is the pinnacle 2D Sonic game for me.

Sonic 3 on its own doesn't stand a chance. Sonic and Knuckles without its companion game feels just a bit too light. Together, they make for the peak of Sonic's career.

Probably the last good Sonic game for a while, the levels are not as memorable as the second game but some of the gameplay mechanics are new and inventive. I could never be fussed about playing Knuckles though.
Pretty good game, better than its predecessors. Music absolutely slaps, and the game mostly fun to play.

only like it marginally more than mania due to nostalgia. shame sega will never free it again due to bullshit copyright issues with the music, but at least there's sonic 3 AIR

I really really enjoy S3&K level design, it's incredibly good just in terms of level density and smart use of building up momentum and utilizing downtime. The 2D Sonic games really find their rhythm here, ironing out the issues like enemies within the pathway that you have to outright memorize to not take hits and making sure the downtime where you're not speeding through is effective.
The speedruns of the game elegantly show how strong the levels get, and the exploration element to find the chaos emeralds is pretty fun this time around too. The minigame to get it itself is still ok at best but at this point I've come to expect it. The bosses this time around are also pretty strong, and not much needs to be said on the game's excellent soundtrack.
It's great, everything from Mushroom Hill to IceCap to Sky Sanctuary is strong and consistent. Sure, you do have a couple stinker levels and the platforming in of itself doesn't get to anywhere where I'd call it amazing, but I definitely enjoyed my time through the whole thing.

It's alright. I don't like it as much as many. Found some levels to be boring, and the special stages stress me out. Fuck the final boss with super/hyper sonic.
Best Sonic game, even though it's not one of the ones I played as a kid. Don't miss it!
While I have problems with Sonic 3 & Knuckles separately as individual games, when combined they make a very enjoyable plat former. As a whole package you get a nice variety of zones to play through, multiple playable characters, fun music, probably the best controls in the series, and overall just a great game to replay. But I still think Sonic 2 is better.
The best and most memorable of the classics, kept me hooked in 2013, play the ios version fo- oh wait. Uh, play it on Classic Collection if you want it portable until legal stuff gets sorted out
it can be argued that there are better boss designs in other games, especially in sonic cd, but this is my favorite sonic. the peak.
for lthe longest time if you asked me to name my favorite video game of all time it was a dead heat between this & ocarina of time. and it's not really that they were ever surpassed. (well... i think wind waker surpassed ocarina of time, actually, but that's another conversation.) it's just that our understanding of what a video game can be changed drastically.
